I just received the February 2004 issue of "Cruise Travel" magazine today, and lo and behold M.T. Schwartzman in the annual New Ship Preview reveals that the QM2 will have the prefix R.M.S. for Royal Mail Ship given to her. Swartzman quotes a Cunard spokesman as saying, "This is a real coup for us."

So she will join an elite group of ships/boats with this designation or carrying the mail . The R.M.S. SEGWUN carries the Canadian Royal Mail across the waters of Lake Muskoka in Ontario, and there is the small mail ship that delivers the Royal Mail to St. Helena in the South Atlantic. In America the DELTA QUEEN, AMERICAN QUEEN and MISSISSIPPI QUEEN carry the U.S. Mail, and have their own post marks to cancel the mail.

They sure seem to be milking the Cunard history aspect for all its worth, can they really grant her the prefix R.M.S ? She is hardly a mail ship...

Im not saying I disagree with all this hype but it seems QM2's entire marketing is just about Cunards past...

This coming from the land where titles can be sold to the highest bidder! This is nothing but marketing nonsense bought and paid for by Carnival Corporation.

It's not artificial IF she actually carries mail. IF.

I don't think she should have this title if she does not carry any.

Personally, I'm glad she's getting R.M.S. Now there's just one other thing she needs to make her like the other Queens, one I hope she'll never get- serving in war.

Now with regards to the RMS title before QM2's name, it is a fraud if the ship is not chartered by the Crown for the carriage of the mails. RMS = "Royal Mail Ship"...not Reallybig Motorship!

Marlowe....Royal Mail ships were never chartered to carry the mails. It was a contract, usually eagerly sought after, to provide space on specified sailings to specific ports. Those ships dedicated to that service were referred to as Royal Mail Ship.

Same difference...a Crown contract which the QM2 won't have thus not truthfully entitling the ship to be an RMS.

One question...was QE2 an RMS when new? Which was in fact the last true RMS delivered?

Yes. The RMS was only dropped from the name after the re-engining.

With all due respect to Cruise Travel magazine, has anyone else heard Cunard announce this?

P.S. Thanks for the lesson in peerages and other titles - it's always nice to see everyone get along so well...

Gosh...

Just when I thought the peerage discussion had settled down it flared up again and was beginning to consume this thread - which suprisingly is not about (human) peerage at all...

Given that it was veering off course I was left with no choice but to excise the topic as best I could. You are welcome to resurect the subject in the Mid-Ships Lounge or via e-mail/private messages.

Going forward, remember the tone we try to set here is similar to what one would find during a cocktail reception with the Captain. Please try to keep that in mind during your discussions with fellow CruiseTalkers.

RMS is just Royal Mail Steamer (maybe now ship)
is given by Royal Mail fore shipping post to in this case America. The ship must have space in wich post could be stowed. And the ship must be fast ore in a certain amound off time taken the mail to the port off destination. I believe that Queen Mary 2 have given this pre fix one those reasens.

So this is not a royal tittle given by the Queen it's given by Brittisch post compagny Royal Post.

Me and Maasdam said the same thing and post at same time but he said better then I could have said, maybe great minds think alike... In the old days Motor Vessels (MV) were in some adds something like R.M.M.V. that was Royal Motor Mail Vessel, or R.M.M.S. as some times said Royal Motor Mail Ships...

Sorry Joe sometimes we drink a little too many "cocktail's" and tone off a bit... its just I guess we get passionate about a subject and are too quickie to reply too. I know i sounded off a few words i wish i did not post but also seeing some other replies from others i know we all do that too...

Anyway i think QM2 should be G.T.M.S.
(Gas Turbine Mail Ship) !

Hey,
If it helps fill the ship and prosper, let Carnival do whatever. Promoting Cunard's history and adding in RMS adds to the "Royal" image that Americans love.
Besides, RMS Queen Mary 2 sounds better than just plain Queen Mary 2.

I agree....whether or not the RMS prefix is a fraud is hardly important. What's important is that the ship does well...and if placing three letters before her name helps her along, I'm all for it.

So often I read about "Carnival's hype" and "Carnival playing up that" but, truth is, Cunard has been "milking" their history long before Carnival took over.....actually, as far back as the '20's!

I see nothing wrong with these various concessions to maritime history, its all part of the Cunard brand.

However, it’s hard to imagine the general public sending their mail by snail again? Mind you a Queen Mary 2 stamp on your envelope to NY would have quite a lot of kudos! I can't imagine my local post office giving me the option!

I wonder if the QM2 will or can carry any freight?

I am sorry to be the nay sayer here, but R.M.S. will be a faux title for a faux liner. QM2 is neither and in fact she is a topheavy bloated caricature of the three genuine Queens which have preceeded her. Further, her owners are no longer a steamship line with grand traditions, but rather a cruise marketing megalith extraordinaire.

Again, sorry but the truth cannot be submerged under waves of hype and those clinging to liferings vainly believing that the past can somehow be recovered.

Well she is a liner, so you don't know what the truth is. And if you think that a ship has to be built exactly like the original QUEEN's MARY and ELIZABETH were built to be a liner, then I've got news for you and a bridge to sell you first.

Marlowe: I believe the many enthusiastic postings on "Live from QM2," effectively counter your position of "faux grandeur" and whatever.

Granted we are talking about the maiden voyage where "Murphy" is an ever-booked passenger.

But the enthusiasm of those onboard effectively counter your opinions, as expressed here.
