I wonder why they would take her all the way down to Curacao from Freeport and not take her directly to Rotterdam.

Well, in the Poseidon Adventure Book, the ship stopped at Curaco to take on oil for stability, but there was a strike, and after being delayed for 24 Hours, and being pressed for time, the captain left Curaco without taking on the Cargo as well as the venezuelan Oil. he also didn't want to pump in seawater because the salt will clog the pipes, and that left the ship top heavy and vurneable to any wave. It would be good to go there because she would need oil. Are they gonna tow her or use her main engines to take her home?

I found out one of the reasons she would be going to Curacao - asked a friend who is a Captain on a HAL ship. He said "it will probably be for dry dock as it's NL and probably space or cost."

Don't think it's for oil.

I Forgat to say that there are some problems with the airconditioning a/b ship maybe thats the reason. One reason would be that the ship is painted there in the old HAL colors off gray hull with gold ribbon I hope so. We don't talk about iff the ship is going one here own power. O so stupid frome me not to ask.

Great to hear this Maasdam!! It was a long time so quiet with news about her. They try to do as much work as possible overthere as it would be so much more expensive here in NL... This promises to be a great happening in Rotterdam this June!!

Now this is bloody nonsense!!!!
There is NO crew to bring her home!!!
It is not yet decided to which drydock she will go and when!!!

Who did you talk to????
Have you been to the General Meeting of De Lijn? ? ?

After the meeting, the Steamship Rotterdam Foundation was present at a table close to the exit. We had our new flag hanging out!!

During the meeting, our chairman did give some information as he has been to the ship just a few weeks ago. He also did tell the ship will not arrive in Rotterdam before September 2005!!

On http://www.dutchcargoships.com/ssrotterdam/ you will find a lot of photos of the s.s. REMBRANDT (still her official name but no longer registered in Nassau). Photos are made by Mr. Rienk Koopmans (RDM) and Mr. Frits Loomeijer (MMR). Unfortunately their names are not quoted on the website.

They made a photo of the cabin I used to sleep in in 1959/1960. On the second page you will find it. Cabin B4.

Within a short period a report will be published by the Steamship Rotterdam Foundation, but first of all there will be a meeting with RDM.

Rest me to assure you that NO date for returning to the Netherlands is known NOR is it known if the ship will go under own power or to be towed (presumably the latter).
Drydock might be in Freeport, Curacao, Cuba, Singapore or Turkey. You see, that too is not decided yet.

Regards,

Pity that there's no confirmating message about what will happen and what not. Anyway, thanks Willem for the link. Nice to see her in such a detail. Some areas look great, some really need to be fixed.

That has been taking off during her Premier period. Had something to do with a bridge.

When you clean the tables, use a vacuumcleaner and put the tables and chairs in a decent way, the orchestra can come in to play the music.

The ship is awfull dusty. Some pipings are cracking and leaking and the sewage need to be taken care of.

More info is hopefully coming soon.

Well, while it is sad to hear that this news is not true, I really do hope that this effort is successful. It seems this is the last chance we have at having a real ocean liner preserved and there is arguably no better ship for that purpose.

I missed out on this ship in active service, I really do hope I can visit her in retirement!

That's not surprising. The A/C never worked properly when she was the Rotterdam V. Every cabin we had also had a fan mounted on the wall and even that didn't do any good. There were many nights that we slept with no blankets or even a sheet because of the heat. At times it was stiffling, especially when we went through the Canal.

Ben,

I received copies of the mails and they were very friendly.
Now, here is a very good advice! Whenever you hear such a rumour from an unknown person, don't publish it on an international forum, but try to get a confirmation from people who know more about the subject, i.e. the Foundation.
Also, on the annual meetings of De Lijn, you will get more trustfull information than from a stranger during your coffee-break in a shoppingcentre.

The message you brought up here on the forum is indeed the 'thousands' rumour!

You suggested that the chairman would not have the full information. As he told you, he knows everything that is going on with the ship thanks to our very good cooperation with RDM and the municipality of Rotterdam.

Ben,

Publishing this kind of unconfirmed rumours is showing a lack of respect towards th Steamship Rotterdam Foundation, who worked so hard to get the ship home.
You don't want to know how much time has been and still is involved.
Without the Foundation, the ship could be in Alang by now!!

mr. W. v/d. Leek.

I´m not able to send you an e-mail buth in my last mail i wrote all credith to the foundation and never talk with no respect. So i have showed respect to the foundation. And via the free controbution fore this year wich i paid because i support the foundation fore there hard work. I never want this topic to have this result. As you no there is a lot remours about almost everthing on cruise talk. And wasn´t the foundation who began with saying whene the ship was returning home fore several times.
That you want to discus about my information it´s alright and iff i´m wrong i will take my information back. Buth it´s seems that normal communication to me was difficult. I look to the second mail i reseved and i found it very unplacend the way this mail was written. Maybe the chairman and you mr. v/d Leek say this mail was friendly i found it not.

Ben.

mr. v/d Leek iff you want to react one this pleace do this via mail. I want to stop to talk about this via cruise talk. You are welcom.
