Well one more classic is gone! Too bad I couldn't snap a few pictures of her when I was down in the Bay Area ...Anyone from the Bay Area that saw her "towaway"?
Sad News. The Artship website is (for now) still up and running. http://www.artship.org/It includes a nicely done slide show of the ship as she is today, both inside and out. There's also some good stuff on her long history.
Too bad this interesting approach to saving a classic didn't make it.
My understanding from their website was that Artship was to have put money aside originally to tow the ship back to Suisun Bay in the event the project failed. I wonder where that money is today?
This from the Oakland Tribune

The Artship, a more than 10-year-old dream of Oakland artist Slobodan Dan Paich, has been sold by the Port of Oakland to a Texas-based scrap metal company, which towed away the 65-year-old ship Tuesday. The sale was a result of fruitless negotiations between the port and the Artship Foundation, which could not generate the money needed to make the Artship dream a reality, port officials said. "The vessel needed work, millions of dollars' worth of work before it could have been used," said port spokesman Harold Jones. "It just didn't appear as if they were going to be able to garner the financial support they needed."

Another loss of a irreplacable vintage ship!

She has been bought by a Texan scrapping firm, so I presume it will be Brownsville, TX.
Of course now I found this interesting tidbit. THERE IS HOPE FOR THIS WONDERFUL SHIP! http://releases.usnewswire.com/GetRelease.asp?id=174-05042004
Way to go EPA!

Aquaiusha, scrap the Independence! Have you lost your mind!
Thank goodness for Greenpeace and other environmental causes. Maybe theyll save a ship yet.
Artship, in tow behind Tug Rachel, departed the San Francisco Bay area January 15, 2012 on her final voyage and arrived at Balboa, Panama Feb. 7, 2012.
After a brief stay, she headed through the Miraflores Locks of the Panama Canal this morning en route to Brownsville TX for dismantling.
Hardly seems 7 1/2 years since I took that ferry trip just to see her and Independence, which was not long after her sale for scrap was announced. Took a long while to get moving and Independence has gone in the interim.
Pam
It's amazing how much larger the Independence looks over Artship in your pictures Pam, compared to todays 100k ton ships.
It is a shame they couldn't both stay with us, but time marches on...
