February 24: Oakland, California's 1939-built ARTSHIP (ex DELORLEANS, USS CRESCENT CITY, GOLDEN BEAR) has been sold for scrap for $200,000 and towed away on February 23. Artist Slobodan Dan Paich had envisioned a one-of-its-kind floating art gallery and performance center when he began the Artship Foundation project. Oakland Port officials and the Artship Foundation had reached an impasse in negotiations. The ship arrived at the port's Ninth Avenue Terminal in 1999 with promising future but never it generated the financial resources necessary for the upkeep of a vessel. Port of Oakland Commission eventually voted to end a lease it had with the foundation allowing the foundation to berth ARTSHIP at the Ninth Avenue Terminal demanding that $10 million worth of repairs were necessary. The Artship Foundation never agreed with the port's conclusion on the price tag to make the ship safe for the public. Oakland's city leaders disagreed, and the port sued the foundation to evict it from the ship and the dock.

Well one more classic is gone! Too bad I couldn't snap a few pictures of her when I was down in the Bay Area ...Anyone from the Bay Area that saw her "towaway"?

Sad News. The Artship website is (for now) still up and running. http://www.artship.org/
It includes a nicely done slide show of the ship as she is today, both inside and out. There's also some good stuff on her long history.

Too bad this interesting approach to saving a classic didn't make it.

Please let this not be true...the title to the vessel still lays in the hands of the US Maritime Administration who only loaned the ship to the Artship group! MarAd would have to tendered a solication for the ship to be sold for scrap and these days the ships aren't sold but rather a contractor is paid to dispose of the ship for the government. We all remember the 13 which were suppose to be scrapped in England for which MarAd was to have agreed to pay the scrapper $12M to accomplish.

My understanding from their website was that Artship was to have put money aside originally to tow the ship back to Suisun Bay in the event the project failed. I wonder where that money is today?

I guess MarAd didn't want the ship back and allowed the Port of Oakland to sell her for them.

This from the Oakland Tribune

quote:
Oakland's Artship is sold for scrap
10-year-old dream of artist Slobodan Dan Paich towed away Tuesday by Texas-based junk metal company

By Paul T. Rosynsky, STAFF WRITER

OAKLAND -- A ship once envisioned as a one-of-its-kind floating art gallery and performance center will instead become common scrap metal.

The Artship, a more than 10-year-old dream of Oakland artist Slobodan Dan Paich, has been sold by the Port of Oakland to a Texas-based scrap metal company, which towed away the 65-year-old ship Tuesday.

The sale was a result of fruitless negotiations between the port and the Artship Foundation, which could not generate the money needed to make the Artship dream a reality, port officials said.

"The vessel needed work, millions of dollars' worth of work before it could have been used," said port spokesman Harold Jones. "It just didn't appear as if they were going to be able to garner the financial support they needed."

Another loss of a irreplacable vintage ship!

She has been bought by a Texan scrapping firm, so I presume it will be Brownsville, TX.

Artship is currently located at Mare Island. I was told by the guard at the gate, that they are preparing her for transport to Japan, were she will be scrapped. Also there, is the Independence (about time they scrapped her!) and the Tripoli.

Of course now I found this interesting tidbit. THERE IS HOPE FOR THIS WONDERFUL SHIP! http://releases.usnewswire.com/GetRelease.asp?id=174-05042004

Way to go EPA!

I can see why they are scrapping every thing the salvagers can get their hands on. Here in California and I am sure other places, there is a huge shortage of construction steel re-bar which is made of scrap metal. Most seems to come from China where it is manufactured from the scrap. It looks like any out of work vintage ship is at risk of becoming a new shopping mall or apartment block.

Thanks for those pictures! From the side she looks even better! Is DELORLEANS/ARTSHIP another George C. Sharp design? He's the guy that designed the SAVANNAH, among others. This month's Ships Monthly, by the way, has an article on the freighters of the United States Lines, some of which were also designed by him...

I'm sorry the ARTship has been sold for scrap. It was one of those quirky things that made the Bay Area interesting. I exhibited with them; helped address and stamp envelopes for newletters; installed shows; roamed through the bowels of the ship in the dark; and played bass guitar as the assistant director wove his exotic wordplay through and over the raw garage band sound of the Milts for three Mondays in January/February of 2002. I was sad to leave the Bay Area behind.

This is horrible news. If she was sold for only $200,000 that's not much at all. If it was only that sum I don't understand why nothing could be done.
There should be some kind of foundation which accepts donations to help old liners.

Aquaiusha, scrap the Independence! Have you lost your mind!

Thank goodness for Greenpeace and other environmental causes. Maybe theyll save a ship yet.

What a shame. Such a beautiful combo-liner that after being around for so long, deserved to be saved for eventual use in some capacity.

Excellent bunch of photos, thank you. She has rotted a bit, not surprisingly, since 2004, and you hardly see the blue on her funnel in the grabs until she has passed through, very pale.

Hardly seems 7 1/2 years since I took that ferry trip just to see her and Independence, which was not long after her sale for scrap was announced. Took a long while to get moving and Independence has gone in the interim.

I remember seeing her on numerous occasions when I was stationed on USS Shasta. We spent a lot of time at Mare Island and at the Concord Naval Weapons Station (the old Port Chicago) just up past the Suisun Bay reserve fleet.

It's amazing how much larger the Independence looks over Artship in your pictures Pam, compared to todays 100k ton ships.

It is a shame they couldn't both stay with us, but time marches on...

I saw her about 20-years ago while in the bay area. My brother and I were crossing a bridge and I saw this vintage all white combo-liner docked nearby. I had no idea what ship it was but was amazed that a ship of period was still around and looked like it was still in active service. Years later I discovered it was the 'Artship'.
