I’m looking for a good picture of the block like P&O logo as portrayed on the funnel of the Spirit of London in 1972. I have tried searching for some good images of the logo on the ship or in advertisement material but could not find any.

Did only the Spirit of London as a P&O ship carry this 70’s logo on the funnel?

Thanks for the help.

Onno

Did'nt their non-passenger carrying merchant ships carry that logo on a different color funnel in the 1970sl. I recall seeing one on a bulk carrier or cargo vessel of some type.

Yes she did, at least during her launching, see this thread here.

I have another b&w photo taken sometime after the launching (before 1974 of course) in one of my book where the logo is a bit more visible.

I looked up a book I have entitled 'Crescent Color Guide to ships' originally published in 1971 and it shows a P&O supertanker called 'Ardlui' registered in London with a medium blue colored funnel and the blocky P&O logo painted on it. So as it seems P&O did use that logo on some other ships as well.

Onno, I believe this is what the logo looked like on Spirit of London.
This is the only image I could find.

Onno, did you ascertain if any other P&O ship [cruise] had this logo? I was looking but can't see one?

I know the P&O cargo/container/bulkers all had a similar logo on the merger in 1971, but with a lightish blue funnel and white lettering. I was trying to find a decent pic of that online.. but can't either! The nearest I got was the lettering format but so small..

The later cargo ships, were back to darker blue with normal lettering and the ampersand of which I can find many photos.. just not what one wants.

I know that other companies drastically changed their logo’s to new modern (for that time) logo’s. Maybe P&O tried it first on the Spirit of London but never got around or decided not to go trough with the logo on the other P&O passenger ships. I have only seen it on S of L the first couple of years before she went sailing for the Princess brand as Sun Princess.

I also refered to more visible B/W photo in the book : The Cruise Ships [The Photo courtesy by P&O and seemed both photos were taken at the same time] and refered to more books.

P&O operated Pacific Pricess in winter 1975/76 with Arcadia and Oriana.
Pacific Princess was scheduled out of Sydney from Dec. 19 1975 until May 21 1976.
Prior to sailing, P&O advertised Pacific Princess with P&O Logo on the yellow colored funnel in the brochure but The photo was photographic rendition because the brochure was issued in Mar. 1975 when she was sailed as Princess Cruise ship in Mexican waters.
In 1976, Pacific Princes sailed South Seas Islands cruise out of L.A. from Oct.4 until Nov. 24.

Thanks for the info Ocean Liners.

So In a way P&O was searching with the Spirit of London for a separate cruise identity and when they acquired Princess cruises in 1974 (though briefly exploring the yellow livery with above logo on Pacific) decided that the Princess image was the one for their cruise market.

I thought that the other ship was supposed to be named the "Spirit of Southampton"?

Spirit of London originally ordered by the Norwegian Kloster Rederi, from whom P&O took over the contract in 1971. Norwegian Caribbean Lines ordered Two ships, to be built at CN del Tirreno & Riuntiti, which were Southward and Spirit of London.
Southward was built at Yard no.288 and completed in Dec. 1971 beside Spirit of London was built at yard no. R290 and delivered in Sep. 1972.

P&O intended to accuire two more cruise ships: Island Venture and Sea Venture.

Onno; She looks fantastic! The only question I have is did'nt she have four decks of windows on her hull? The photos I have of her show one cabin deck of rectangular windows and three decks of portholes. The lowest row is quite close to the boot topping. I also checked the NCL version of her and it shows the same window/porthole combination.
