If you look at QE2 sailing today...

You will see a strange white box in~front of the funnel on the roof of Signal Deck - please tell me it is not permanent & what is it?!

(Images borrowed from the excellent web-site www.southamptonships.com with thanks).

Looks pretty permanent, maybe air conditioning related? And what are the ungainly full length widows that have appeared forward just above the black hull paint under the 3rd lifeboat?

They have been there for a long time.

The aft ones were added in the 1990's when the "Mid ships suite" was added. The others were added in 1999 when the Aquitania suite was added.

I love QE2 but don't like the roof box altho my friend Jenny said maybe she just wanted a new hat???

I wonder if it is a stairwell for a new private sundeck/observation deck for the suites-Can Cunard possibly pile any more on top??

Yes!!! If they like to! Very strange box though, maybe it is Todd English restaurant?!

It appears to be open from the back side, maybe to compete with rock climbing wall you can slide of the funnel wind scopes and the box is to catch you.

hi Chris,

Cunard took the decision to add the fixed canopy, and also enlarged the nearby bar area, due to the ship swapping to full time cruising. Apparently it was thought as the ship will now spend more time in the sun it would be an added facility for passengers.

As the ship is now in Oslo, I just received an email telling that Cunard added a new outdoor bar on Sundeck, called 'Funnel Bar'.
This is a quote from that message:

They did quite a nice job of it, in my opinion, with a stainless steel topped teak bar on the portside, with teak barstools, midship against the bulkhead under the clock is a barbecue enclosed in teak with stainless fittings, and starboard is a small stage for the band to play on for sail-away parties, and teak cabinetry for the storage of towels, etc. Over head of all this is a "yacht-club" type white awning supported by white "masts" that are angled outwards facing aft. The awning is above the clock but below the "Queen Elizabeth 2". It all looks very crisp and contemporary, and the decking
underneath is new. There are new teak tables and chairs adjacent.
The teak steamer chairs are gone from the sundeck though, just the aluminum ones up there, but the boat deck still has plenty, along side the white plastic ones.

Thanks Luke, that explains the change behind the funnel on Sundeck but any ideas on the box infront of the funnel on Signal deck as shown in your pics.

'Funnel Bar'---bah!! They have taken our special place!

They have taken the place on the ship where my wife and I used to sit and watch the ocean roll out from under the stern..teak deck chairs, attentive deck stewards, low, quiet, civilized conversation with "neighbors" in other deck chairs, or a quiet read, in short, the real Cunard experience, and have now made it a place for THEM! Bah!

We could escape up THEM up there, the loud-mouthed clatterjaws, the women who always laughed with an ear-splitting shriek, the moneyed windbags who compared their stock holdings at sound levels 10db in excess of the threshold of pain. THEY never came up to that little aerie under the clock and builder's plate. It was OURs, dammit, and now.........oh well. Oh hell.

Luke, is it possible please to take a crop out of your original photo of that outlet? Might give a clearer impression? I can only assume it's to do with the new a/c I think someone, Chris?, mentioned in a post was being upgraded. [Superb photos throughout your site Luke ]

New larger A/C units for the penthouse suites seem to be a real possibility. With QE2 possibly sailing more into warmer climates, she may need the larger units to cool those aluminum boxes.

How about a roof rack and some surfboards?

Anyway, assuming it has a worthwhile function, the box isn't TOO bad looking. Much, much better than the air conditioning scoop that was tacked onto the bottom of the fuselage of my 1979 Cessna 172.

It seems as if there is railing behind it evident in Luke's first picture. There is a door on the side but the back of it looks like airvents. Probably aircon related then.

Sure looks like air-condtioning equipment to me. Like a larger version of those they mount on buses to give them more room under the floor for baggage. Given that the cabins are "add-ons" this would make their A/C more independent from the overall ship's A/C system.

The strange thing is sure, shes cruising now but she has always cruised. On the World Cruise she is in Australia during our summer when 40C is not rare.. and there never seemed to be a heat problem upstairs... so *shrugs*

Take a look at this pic...

(from jlippert.net thanks!!)

It shows light coming out of the door in the side of the new box - why light if its an aircon plant?
