yes, a great book about the designer, william francis gibbs,
the history of the united states
line, what lead up to the construction of the big u and
finally the ss united states
foundation that is trying to save the ship.
as most of us know ncl has bought the ship and plans are being made to bring her back
into service.
she will have 3 decks added and
a diesel-electric propulsion
system.

I'm going to order it ... thanks, Malcolm.

It just has to be better than Bill Miller's "Picture History of the SS UNITED STATES". About less than half dedicated to the ship; the rest is filler about the history of other US Lines' ships.

Hi Luke,

Actualy Desirod and I have been making concepts for Big U as a cruise ship long before NCL had announced their purchase of the ship.

There is a long thread about it on Cruise Talk (I’ll see if I can dig it up for you) and of course I have a little article on my site: Resurrecting the s.s. United States

The new information gives all new possibilities, the strive is to convert her to a cruise ship, but to keep her essences as Big U.

Best,

Onno

I hope when they say 3 decks will added that the 3rd will be an observation or sun deck. She will end up looking worse than Norway did after her rebuild with the addition of 3 full decks! Two decks of veranda cabins in my opinion should be the max.

I have the original book which forms the bulk of this one: "The Big Ship: The Story of the S.S. United Stated" by Frank O. Braynard. I won't be ordering this one.

Moodus2,

"she will have 3 decks added"

Where did you get this information? I'm afraid you're way ahead of NCL, cause their plans are still in the "ON HOLD" phase.

Luke,

Next year I will be formally presenting the design for rehabilitation. Onno and an architect who was present at the meeting will be collaborating with me.

I have the book and love it! the only problem I have with my copy is there are several pages that look like they were printed on twice. The writing is very dark and smudged.
Is that just my copy or are all of them like that?
