I've bought a new scanner!

Follow the link to pics of ANGELINA LAURO buring in St. Thomas. I bought these at an antique show for $1 for ALL of them.

Here's a tease ... the link is at the bottom

My parents waited years to go on Angelina...and finally got their chance...the bad part was they were to depart on her the Saturday AFTER she burned in St Thomas. I still remember seeing her burn on NBC Nightly News as a last minute segment, my parents didn't know she was on fire because they were staying overnite in Chicago to catch and early am flight to San Juan...when they got to SJ, they were re-directed onto Cunard Countess....I have too look, I have some photos of her burning that were taken from Cunard Countess that I will post. She was always my favorite liner....

The date of the fire was 30 March, 1979. She settled in 30ft. of water, was refloated on 6 July and, later, was towed to Kaohsiung for scrapping. She never made it ... she sank in the Pacific on 24 September.

Wonderful selection of photos Russ, bargain indeed. I often wonder how many of such photos just get eventually binned as people think they are no longer of any interest.
Wile1170, would love to see yours too if you can find them.

Thanks.

Since I've bought a new scanner/copier/printer, I'm going to post a lot from my collection ... I have photos that will knock your knickers off (such as unpublished pics taken on board Lusitania, Wilhelm Gustloff, Maurentania (I), etc.

I can finally share this stuff with folks who won't give me blank stares. This is too fun.

Russ,
I was priviledged to visit her on the monday 26 march and expected the see the engine-room the folowing monday....
Will never forget the strong smell of fresh paint and carpet throughout.
She had come back from refit and was top notch.
Someone however forgot to switch the sprinklers back on, allowing the galley fire to spread.
Did she actually touched the botom?
It seems her unusual hull stopped her capsizing.
Also, shae sank off Clipperton, a French Navy island in hte Pacific.
Any one dived on her?

Grahame,
did she change very much regarding her interior?

Or was it merely the outward looks that were modernized by Lauro?

Am I glad you got a new scanner Russ! Anyway great pictures of the not so great fire. Angelina Lauro is such an interesting ship. Hard to believe she was once the Oranje (one look at the belly of the “pregnant” lady and you know it) I liked her looks better as the Angelina, IMHO her proportions where strange as the Oranje, I guess this is a case of two ships for the history of one.

I believe much (or all) of her interiors of the Oranje days were replaced when she was transformed to Angelina Lauro.

Best, Onno

PS here is a picture of Oranjes interior. nice Dutch art deco.

Glad everyone liked the pics.

How wonderful that a few of you were able to be aboard her! I agree with Onno that she looked better as the Angelina; though I think, as Oranje, her profile would have been more pleasing with an additional stack.

And, yes, her pronounced tumblehome does (or should I say "did") make her look pregnant. It always reminded of Hapag's pre-war Ballin-class.

Lewis, I've read a few different claims that she did touch bottom ... I guess that's what took so long to move her out of the harbor.

Nice interior, Onno, ... thanks. Got to admit, I'm not too familiar with her interiors, pre or post refit. Much better than I anticipated.

Russ

This seemed to be a tendency with Dutch East India Liners : Johan van Oldenbarnevelt also perished in fire in 1963, as the Lakonia, with a serious loss of life.

The pictures are very interesting. I think 'Oranje" looked better than Angelina Lauro, cleaner perhaps ?

The colorcombination with the Costa funnel doesn't look very good, I think, awful really.

I am looking forward to more scanned pictures

Bye

As a kid collecting brochures, ANGELINA LAURO was always a favorite ship. I loved all the swimming pools! Thankfully I saved all those brochures, and I have a great one of ANGELINA LAURO while being operated by Costa. It's what Costa used to call a "descriptive" brochure, and it's just about the ship with huge photos and a very detailed deck plan. There is no information about itineraries or pricing. Costa used to publish one of these brochures for all their ships, and they were fantastic. I probably have five or six of them for different Costa ships.

If only such a thing were printed today for the ships we love.

I fully agree with you Ernie!
I used to collect all those fabulous illustrated Booklets.
The also had separate deck plans.
Onno, could you publish or make us a link for the the very unusual interior color pictures a while ago.
She must have had another refit as I remember much green and oranges! Very disco..
As I boarded her, I noted the tumblehome, and the door seems to be leaning away from the pier.
Silly teenager refused to go to the engine-room!
Captain was busy, as ship just came from refit(where they having difficulties with the sprinklers?).
I discovered that she caught fire during the 60's refit, like Achilles! So they were a bit fire prone.
But like Achille, she was very special for an architectural point.
When I got the full GA plans from Lauro, I was shocked to see 3 propellers, and a very fish like hull!
I decided to collect all I could about classic liners et voila..I became a shiplover!
I learnt to dive, and tried the French Navy whose base at Clipperton is near wreck of Angie, but too far!
One day may be?
Has anybody dived them(Achille sank deep too)?

Ernie, also got a couple of those wonderful descriptive Costa brochures of the Eugenio C. Federico C. Carla C. Enrico C. Danae and Italia. Probably the best brochures I got, a pure homage to each ship.

Louy, I’m not sure which pictures you mean?
