The Princesa Victoria arrived in Alang on May 25th. I guess the rumours of her becoming a hotel ship in London were just fairy tales. How horrible that such a fine looking historic ship should wind up in pieces on the muddy beach.

Dear Anthemius,

I saw this information on ssMaritime. I am so sad about it.

It is a pity indeed!
Wish she went to the bottom instead and found one day like Oceanos or Bianca C!
It was two ships in one, and quite unique at it really.
Italians may have made her more elegant, but certainly not as robust!
She was so lovingly washed every time with Guadeloupe waters(Christofer Columbus for "Beautiful waters").
She is the last big Chandris classic, apart from Atlantis, soon to join her as Explorer!(ne General WP Richardson).
Now, the fabulously intimate domed Roman restaurant will echoes a very awful music!

I am glad to have sailed in her, even if it was only a 2-nighter in Oct 2000, the last trip the ship made to Israel. I still remember the piano tunes played live during the dinner in that gorgeous Roman Restaurant.
Very Stylish!
Did any of you sail on the THE VICTORIA or the VICTORIA (when under Incres Lines)?

In the summer of 1975, my wife booked Incres; paid our T/A and everything. But there was a strike, crew was laid off in (I think, Brooklyn); the Victoria cruise was scrubbed; and our T/A got us on Nordic Prince. I am sure we had a less exciting, more routine, and our only Caribbean Cruise. OK, but not Victoria.

Wished it had worked out.

Maritime matters reports:

June 3: New images from Alang reveal the following about key passenger ships recently delivered for breaking:

VICTORIA I (ex DUNNOTTAR CASTLE, VICTORIA, THE VICTORIA, PRINCESA VICTORIA), although reported delivered to shipbreakers, has not been sighted by our local agent. Perhaps she is one of many vessels at anchor in the Gulf of Cambay awaiting a breaking yard as scrap prices recently plummeted. In the meantime, it seems yet another last minute attempt to save a vintage passenger ship from scrapping has failed.

Well, prices have plummeted quite predictably with all this scrapping!
Perhaps she has another name?

I think she was renamed to DUNNOTTAR CASTLE again.

I am heartbroken to read these messages. Was on the Victoria when she was a beautiful Incres ship in 1963. She was just so lovely, with huge cabins.

Keep posted with any updates

Thanks

Hi LizNJ,
I am collecting material for a ship history of this ship. Do you happen to have made pictures of the ship back then, which you could scan for me? Or do you remember any uncommon circumstances or happenings worth being mentioned in a ship history of that ship?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Michael from Germany

Oh, Michael

I wish I did, but I don't think so. The trip was in 1963, my college graduation present. At that age, one really doesn't think about preserving memorabilia, at least I didn't. And it was so long ago

But I will look in attic boxes, just to see.

My most vivid recollection is how large the cabins were, and I had had enough experience to
appreciate that.

I was doing a lady's share with an elderly woman, which certainly precluded any cabin parties.

I think that there were few my age on board. But those that were were adopted by an older couple who took us ashore on Guadaloupe for a fancy lunch and swimming at a private home.

I know I had a really good time.

If I understood correctly you are a lady. Somhow I imagined you as a male... Perhaps because most of the ship lovers seem to be male, like me. Probably boys do kling to technical things more than girls...

There are a lot of questions I would like to ask you:

Do you remember whether the main evening entertainment took place in the Riviera Lounge (overlooking the pools) or the El Patio Lounge (forward observation Lounge)? They seem to have changed this since.

Was the deck in front of the bridge superstructure designated as Sports deck or was it still the deck behind the funnel (on top of Riviera Lounge)?

Was there a Protestant religious service ? The crew was Italian, and Protestant Religious service was a problem on the first sailings from New York.

Thanks for your answers. I know that it is 40 years ago though...

From Chandris 1976 Victoria's deck plan,
There was El Patio lounge facing the Sports deck in the bow on the Lido deck(Pont Randez-Vous).
Sun deck(Pont Soleil) and cabin area called Pearl deck(Pont Perle) were located one deck above Riviera Ballroom.

I hear the Victoria I has been berthed in India while the scrappers try to wiggle out of their purchase due to falling steel prices.

Could she get a reprieve at this late stage?

If any party has the money to buy her and preserve her I would think she could be saved. In the early 1980s when the beautiful Cristoforo Colombo (Andrea Doria's twin sister) was sold for scrap on Taiwan, her scrappers moved her to Hong Kong in order for any interested cruise line to take a look at her for possible conversion. She was sadly later towed back to Taiwan and finished off.

Phil,
do you know where in India she is berthed? I heard that she was somewhere near Bombay?

Princesa Victoria is berthed some 250 km away at Jamnagar as her resale to Indian breakers is renegotiated in light of the recent drastic devaluation of scrap metal prices.

I'm a new member on here.. The only ship I've ever been on was the Victoria. It was in October of 1974 and it was very memorable. I was so surprised when I learned a few years ago that she was still around. Hopefully there can be some way of saving her. Thirty years later I'm finally going aboard a ship again: the QE2 crossing in mid December.

With the recent plunge in metal prices I am wondering if maybe we wont see too many more ships heading to Alang for a while??? Like the Ocean Explorer 1, she may not end up in Alang either due to the metal prices as she has been reported sold for scrap, BUT with the current situation with the scrapyards who knows if she will go anywhere for the time being!! As I believe she is still at Eleusis Greece! And what about the ships that are at Alang already? The Harmony1(ex Regent Star) what about her, will she just sit their until prices rise or will they dismantle her now?

ssmaritime reports:

Due to low scrap metal prices, Victoria, ex Princesa Victoria, The Victoria, Victoria, and Dunnottar Castle, The breakers decided not to take her to Alang, but berthed her at Jamnaga India and is currently listed as for sale.

1 July 2004: Today we received several approaches from interested parties. These are. 1 A ship owner and 2 a finance company. As you can see we not given up on this amazing ship and hope for a last minute reprieve. More when it comes to hand.
