Great shots Linerguy. She is such a sleek ship without an ounce of excess fat anywhere (except those incredible oversized funnels!)

Odd that she looks in poor condition but with some sandblasting and new paint she would look new outside, this ship was built to last...

The first time, I managed to get aboard through connections with a guy who sold ocean liner memorabilia in Atlanta. He knew the guard, a rugged gal, who acted as security guard at the gangway. He arranged for my friend, Dave, and I to go on board. We drove 10 hours, overnight, got to the ship at 9am, climbed everywhere on the damn thing, and left at 6pm. We stayed the night and drove home the next morning.

The second time, at the CSX terminal, a friend in Lakehurst who knew the ship's last captain, Alexanderson, managed to get us on.

I know it's terrible but, I can't remember the dates! Mid to late 80's.

The reason the ship was, supposedly, registered in Seattle was because, at the time, she was owned by a Seattle businessman, Richard Hadley, who was suppose to fix her up. He ended up being just a bag of hot air who was more interested in buying shopping malls.

Glad everyone likes the pics.

Russ

With all the respect for the Noway fans , SS United States looks better . As same one posted a good dry dock will make it st for long time . Technically speaking i see a good deal buying it for NCL. No other ship build in the "old cruising era"cannot compare with this . Even with the ship age when will operate will be the fastest cruise ship in the world . The still they build or aluminium must be good quality .So many years past and same of the paint went off on most of the surface. Any other ship i see till new in the same not operational conditions for such long time will look like a wreck .

Nice interesting pics, linerguy.
Seeing them, I thought it would be a pity if these beautiful lines would be deformed and altered by balconies etc.
I know the ship isn't economical as she is now, but as a piece of design, craftmanship and art, it would be a shame...still scrapping would be worse...
just lying there, and letting the time take her toll, a melancholical reminder of times long past...those faded funnels, isn't that best ? with sometimes someone like you, entering and visiting the mystery ship, bringing out pictures everyone is eager to see

If NCL really do resurrect this wonderful ship, as far as I’m concerned, it will eclipse the achievements of the QM2 – and I’m not even an American!

It will be the biggest come-back since the SS Norway's story!
