Here are photos from PFEL and APC brochures in 70s and 80s

Monterey's Boat deck was given an extended deck space for the roof of new additional cabins of extended decks in the bow of the Promenade deck, officer's quaters coverted to cabins in portside/midship, Pool terrace and Pool was removed and extended to aft for new cabins and The Verandah.

In addition to the above, Prommenade deck was added new pool and extended open deck just above the additional cabins on the Maile deck.

P.S. Here's a link to Monterey's SHIP PROFILE

I cruised on her sister ship Mariposa in 1977 with my grandmother to Alaska. We sailed round trip from Los Angeles and cruised up the coast with ports along the way and up the inside passage to Alaska. I think it was a 14-day cruise (not sure as I was 14 and just did'nt keep track)and we sailed with 300 or so other passengers. She was like an intimate hotel and I became friendly with quite a few of the mostly elderly passengers who treated the few younger passengers as extended grandchildren. It was a very different travel experience than later cruises I have taken as it was a more traditional ocean voyage in feel. We had an interesting passenger on board, the actor Cary Grant along with his daughter Jennifer. I remember the ship was in excellent condition inside and out with no rust anywhere and the crew treated the very few younger passengers very well with special parties and games. The painted US flag ribbon on her bow was a recent addition and I remember several 'regulars' were commenting on it both pro and con. I later learned The two ships were withdrawn from Pacific Far East Line service the following year. Mariposa was sold off to the Chinese and Monterey was later given a major refit that destroyed her good looks in the late 1980s. In my opinion, as you can see by Ocean Liners photos, Monterey was a really attractive 1950s cruise ships before the re-build.

The Monterey got her new looks when Aloha Pacific Cruises acquired her and sent her for a complete refit which included the changes that were mentioned. She came out with a greatly altered profile, but she is still sailing! She sailed Aloha Pacific's ill fated venture cruising the Hawaiian Islands under the U.S. Flag for only a year, too bad she didnt last she could have been good for the Islands! But who knows, I hope World Explorer decides they need two ships, she would be ideal for them! And to sail the Universe Explorer and Monterey to Alaska in the summer, what an experience for classic ship fans!

I do think the Monterey will find a new and good home as she has had considerable work done to her!!

Great pictures of a handsome ship.

But I liked the original Matson Monterey (the late Britannis), better, as I was a homebound passenger on her, Yokohama-Seattle, when she was a troopship (1946).

And it was great.

While I was looking at deck plans of Ellinis and Britanis, I noticed that Britanis had more inner cabins than Ellinis. for Instance Ellinis had two cabins between the hull(between Port and Starboard) on the Upper deck. however Britanis had 6 cabins on the Upper deck.
Unfortunetly I'm not sure about Monterey, but I assume that Monterey's larger cabins converted into Britanis' smaller cabins(One cabins into 2 or 3 cabins or Two cabins into 3 cabins) on the Main/Midships and "A" deck

P.S. Cambodge: Do you remember the season or month when did you depart from Yokohama?

In the 1960s, Mariposa and Monterey were engeged to sail South Seas cruises between California and Australia, they also offered Special Cruise to Great Barrier Reef(Green Island).
Lurline did sail on California-Hawaiian route as well as Four-Island Hawaii cruises.

Ocean Liners: It was late August, 1946, as I recall. I will make a posting on Midships Lounge called "The Stetson Victory and Monterey" in a few days, with more details.

Many cruise talkers knew on The Tale of Tin Can Mail

Matson/PFEL offered one more unique off-port call at Rarotonga.
Ships made an "off-shore" call at this Island. Because its reef-guarded harbour had no pier facilities, the island will, in effet, come to the ship. The Mariposa and Monterey cruised off shore for approximately two hours while island entertainers and craftmen come aboard.

In 1975, Monterey sailed Six Alaska cruises from California.
Though Monterey was scheduled to Sail Hawaii cruses from May to Mid-August in 1976 and 1977.
I assumed Mariposa sailed Alaska cruises four to five cruises and one or two cruise(s) by Monterey.

Take quite a few photos of the model! It seems like you got a good deal. On Ebay the price could have gone quite a bit higher with so many people interested in ocean liner memorabilia.

Wonderful, thanks Claudio. Why is "Arcadia" on the bow? I thought she had a different funnel top?

Arcadia and Iberia were almost identical(Layouts and exterior except Funnel)

Arcadia was built by Brown, Cydebank but Iberia was bult by Harland & Wolff,
therefore they fitted own design's Funnel

Arcadia

Iberia

Arcadia had a black painted domed top on her funnel. The model is of Iberia (with Arcadia's name on her bow).

The model is definately the Iberia. Beside the funnel Iberia's promenade deck extented to the stern which was a cruiser stern rather than the more spoon shaped one of Arcadia. In addition the plating at the forward end of the promenade deck at the end of the enclosed screening is gracefully shaped in a quarter circle whilst Arcadia's was cut straight. Finally the name on the superstructure was alongside the funnel on Arcadia not aft of it as on Iberia. Both wonderful ships to look at and travel on even if Iberia had more than its fair share of mechanical problems.

Whist Monterey had been sailing for Pacific Far East Line, A Writing Room was situated off the forward foyer/Portside and Card Room was located behind the Southern Cross Lounge or off the Aft foyer/Starboard though Aloha Pacific Cruises replaced a Writing room with a Card room, A writing room has became Captain Cook's and a small Gallery transformed into a Boutique.
