We all know that the perfect ship has yet to be designed, but I wondered what would be the ingredients of YOUR perfect ship?

For me the things I want would include a long foredeck and a sweeping bow, a decent balance between hull and superstructure, a terraced stern, at least one quiet swimming pool with no music or entertainment, one small, dark, intimate bar, beautiful art and statues and a promenade deck that encircled the ship without going through a "tunnel" at the bows.

Looking back at my list - which I have only just thought about - the vlosest ships to heaven for me would be Vistafjord, Sagafjord, Canberra and Queen Mary 2.

So what would make your dream ship?

Mike

Sorry - I forgot to add that an Observation Lounge with a forward view also is an essential for me - but that doesn't change the list of ships that meet my criteria!

See the thread immediately below: "France" of 1964 preeminently qualifies:

1. a long foredeck and a sweeping bow,
Just look at any aerial photo of the ship:
2. a decent balance between hull and superstructure
No comment needed!
3. one quiet swimming pool with no music or entertainment
A little lacking here, the interior pool would qualify.
4. , one small, dark, intimate bar,
The "Club Atlantique" eminentaly qualifies here.
5. beautiful art and statues
A matter of taste, I liked what I saw.
6. and a promenade deck that encircled the ship without going through a "tunnel" at the bows.
Without looking at deck plans, I think, this qualifies.

For me, the ideal ship already exists- Caronia. It's a shame I'll never be able to sail on her (unless Saga keeps her until 2040). She is the conclusion of more than 100 years of ocean liner design and construction, literally the last of her breed, the last masterpiece of British shipbuilding art.

If I had to create one it would have a long foredeck and sleek rounded bow, a rounded cruiser stern (I love Rotterdam V's) as mentioned before, a teak boat/promenade deck that circled the entire deck, a rounded bridge front with windows facing forward (like Caronia), nicely tiered aft lido decks with pools (similar to QE2 original layout), and a funnel place amidship like 50s Italian line ships and it should have a lovely sheer to her bow and stern.

Just rebuild a fully air-conditioned Normandie, add a few balconies (not hundreds), another outdoor pool, a lido restaurant and I'm there! The only class distinction would be where you take your meals ... like QM2 & QE2, base it on accommodations.

rustaveli, that's amazing! A perfect modern update of the Ivan Franco class. Any chance of interesting Carnival? That's the kind of design Cunard and Holland America SHOULD be sharing IMO.

Don't forget the fan-tail!

My favorite ship is still the late SeaBreeze during her Dolphin days. They don't build 'em like that anymore!

Just read Clive Harvey's "The Last White Empresses" and - although she breaks almost all my rules - I have to say that I think the "Empress of Canada" was a beautfiul looking ship!!!!

Both ships are nice and I would gladly cruise on either........
but I still prefer Aurora over Oriana.......

It is just that one step better

covered pool for a start,........
very important for cruising in cold climes,
plus it provides extra seating for the Orangery.
The 24 hour Cafe Boudeaux is excellent.
On Aurora, the chandeliers dont
"shake rattle and roll ",in the Alexandria Restaurant,as they do in the Oriental Restaurant on Oriana
