Ben, very interesting pictures indeed, I can't say nice, because they are really horrible and heartbreaking. (the interior pictures are festive, however)
Everybody is in a sombre mood, there was talk about the end of the QE2 and now you show this sad sombre photos.
Is it because it is All Souls today, or the horrible event in Amsterdam today, or in general a sombre mood ??

Johan

Its very a very shocking day here in the Netherlands. Everybody (almost) is talking about Theo van Gogh (he is related in first line to Vincent van Gogh) Fore the second time someone is murdered because he speakes out his opinion. He was a remarkeble man and a great director / writter. Its shocking what happens it makes me and many poeple sad, somber, angry.

The scrapping pictures are not placed because i feel somber ore in the light off the sad events off yesterday inn Amsterdam. No they where placed because they are part off the history off the Nieuw Amsterdam.

Pam thank you, i think the last picture off the serie is the most sad one. Its the one wich showed the last peace off the Nieuw Amsterdam scrapped its a part off the bow.

Greatings Ben.

Is there a picture of ssNA bow whilst she is being scrapped?
I noticed they started from the stern, leaving the funnels and bow intact until the last moment.
What a waist some of the scrappers must have though....

They have thought that. Whene Nieuw Amsterdam arrived even the scrappers noted that they where about to scrap a legend. The actual time between scrapping arrival and scrapping take a view months. In that period the scrap yard removed al art works still in the ship. They also removed the glas light fixtures in the main dinning room. After they ripped the vessel, artifacts and furniture of the vessel apear in the Dutch department store de Bijenkorf in Rotterdam soled theme an entire floor was ussed to display the furniture and deckchares.

There is a picture off the bow being scraped its the last one off the page.

Louy, didn’t you wanted to have a bow for a balcony! That would have been your change. A pity the funnels aren’t saved, a while back I came up with a concept of preserving the funnels as reminders of the ships (since funnels play a big part in the identity of a ship) NAII’s funnels would have looked nice a quirky when placed aligned in green grazing land and cows walking around them. They could be used as storage units, living space or studio’s.

Onno

PS: Ben maybe we should sneak inside the basement of the Bijenkorf to look if any forgotten NA objects were left behind all that time!

Those pictures of the scrapping of the "Nieuw Amsterdam", which is kind of my favourite ship of all times, haunt me since you posted them, Ben, especially the one with "RDAM" being towed away...

It would have been nice to have those funnels preserved. Not easy though (didn't those of the Queen MAry collapse when taken of the ship ?) In "De Grote Drie" there is a pic of the funnels in the dockyard before being installed, full of hope and expectation, rather, than this sad end.

If all those fixtures were sold in the Bijenkorf, they must still be somewhere ! Is there no collection ? Don't they never surface again ? After 30 years they can't be always with the same owners ? Were they sold with "certificates" or any other sign they came from the Nieuw Amsterdam, or were they sold as "second hand objets d'art" ?

I believe you are right Johan, Queen Mary’s funnels were basically a thick layer of red paint with hardly any metal underneath it. The current funnels on QM are replicas replace with the “paint” funnels for the Hotel conversion.

Indeed “de grote drie” holds a couple of interesting pictures of the forward funnel. I have seen some original news footage of the funnel placed on a barge and being towed underneath the “Hef” bridge in Rotterdam for installation on the ship. I always liked funnel number 1’s looks with the large ventilation openings in front. Shortly after she entered service the openings were closed off because the intended air stream, to sweep up the smoke, did not work as planned.

The scraping pictures have a highly emotion contends to it, does it only look that way or was she white instead of the duff grey hull?

Johan sometimes they appear on places you least aspect theme to. I heave seem theme in Maastricht (southern Netherlands) even in Zwolle (northern Netherlands), and many peaces are still in Rotterdam. They where bought by poeple frome around the world and many items are still in the depot off the Rotterdam maritime museum. And some off theme are on display like the Mermaid door handles off the (i believe) Ritz Carlton. And the biggest off al the Grand Lounge pre war ceiling.

Years there where standing in a litle store here in Rotterdam some deck chairs fore sale 2 off the Nieuw Amsterdam 1 one off the Queen Mary and one off the Ille de France they where to expenciff i recall 2000 ech thene in guldens. One importened item is also saved off the scrapyard the steam horns they where ussed years ago by the opening off the new technical university building off Leiden.
Where they are till this day i have no trace found.

Onno funny story about those air openings. They realy not working and iff you see pictures frome here in midt sea you see the smoke coming down direct behind the funnel nr 1. That was 1 class Lido deck and passengers on that deck where constatly covered with black ashes. On one off the first cruises to South America on the fancy dress ball a/b Nw. A'dam there was a male passenger dressed up in black, black hands, black face, black hair and witch a sandwich board. On this sandwich board was written 2 minutes on the Lido deck.

Soon after that at the first anual drydocking inn 1939 the openings where closed.

Greatings Ben.

She was painted in dove grey up to the end. As I posted earlier, there are additional photos of her at kudos-marine.com that show her from a 3/4 stern photo with Homeric next to her. Also shown is a port side close-up with a barge next to her.

Does anyone know when the modern style long narrow (similar to Rotterdam V's) windows were installed in the Henry Hudson lounge on main deck aft?

Different Homeric, different era. The Homeric in the picture is Home Lines' first Homeric (ex-Mariposa) which was scrapped in 1974 after suffering a fire in 1973. She was replaced in the Home Lines fleet by Doric (ex-Hanseatic, ex-Shalom).

After the Nieuw Amsterdam arrived at the scrapyard the Pilot lost controll over here and she collided with the Homeric. Here Dutch crew where worried over posible damage and forgat that she was about to be scrapped. The Pilot simly noted that this was not a problem she and the Homeric would be scrapped.

A proof how carefull the crew was with here even to here last docking they handle here with al the care she deserve.......

After the papers off ownership where signed the yard directors give the crew permission to take litle memorobillia with theme.

They appear after the war whene i look at the pictures before and after the war. I think that they where placed after 1960 whene she was turned over in a two class liner.

According to the HAC 1973/4 Cruse Catalogue issued on June 1973,

Niuew Amsterdam scheduled to Cruise 7, 8, 10-day West Indies Cruise from Fort Lauderdale until ed of 1974 except from Aug. 27 to Sep. 25, 1973.

During the period, She was expected to depart Fort Lauderdale on Aug. 27 on Transatlantic to Lisbon arrive on Sep. 5 and depart there on Sep. 17 and arrive Fort Lauderale on Sep. 25, 1973.

I knew that she departed on final voyage from Fort Lauderale to Los Angeles on January 1974 though

Does anyone know the Itineraies in fact during the period?

Onno,
If you look into my galleries, you will see a Celebrity funnel being built for Chantiers.
I think like you, funnels should be preserved!
Pam,
could you post the picture here?
Usually, bits like place where the champagne bottle strucked are kept.
I am surprised little of the ss NA was saved in Holland.
Normandie bow and various items can be found all over the US and France.

Lewis,
where is the Bow of the "Normandie"
I know only of the first class dining room doors on a church in Brooklyn, a statue in Miami that was re-used, and furniture in a french museum.

You can relax Pam, I found louy’s funnel pictures. Funny how huge a funnel on it’s own looks when out of its context. On the ship it looks rather smallish.
