For the second time on her Australian leg of the 2005 WC QE2 has missed a port. First was Phillip Island where thousands were expected to be waiting - due to rough seas that may hinder the tender shuttle service. The second port was Exmouth in North Western Australia due to the same reason. How bad would seas have to be to actually hinder such a service?

Chris.

interesting point... obviously seas were too bad prior to arriving or the forecast was to get worse and they didnt want to strand passengers ashore.

I guess with any tender port the company take the risk of not being able to stop depending on the weather. If the port is skipped... not only do the passengers miss out but the people/business ashore miss out financially.

The only way around it is to make sure there is a wharf to berth at or alternatively ensure theyre is a bay or protected area which will allow them to anchor etc.

I wonder...
is this type of weather usual, or unusual for the time of year at Philip Island.
If yes, this could have been predicted, and the preparation of the cruise was not very good
if no, cruising around the world must be an adventure !!

Hi Y'all
Back in the early90's on the QE2 W/C we were at anchor off Monte Carlo with a tender service in full swing when the seas got up, and the ship began to slip the anchor. Capt (I think it was Robin Woodall) took us out to sea,"stranding" many pax ashore and quite a few visitors on board. Overnight accomodation was found for all concerned and we anchored off Villefranc the next morning to drop off and pick up.....all in all it was quite exciting.Cheers!

Unusual for Phillip Island due to storms that hit Melbourne. I can't imagine it being usual for Exmouth either.

Chris, weren’t you on the QE2 on its Sydney-Fremantle leg? How bad was it at Phillip Island?

I’ve been there many times photographing events at the motor racing circuit and I have seen Bass Strait choppy, but I wouldn’t have thought anchoring opposite Cowes where it is more sheltered that it would have hindered tendering. As for a pier at Cowes, would one or two ships per year be enough to sway the Victorian government to invest money there?

******

Cheers

Yep I was aboard - we never made it into Phillip Island, rather turned away about an hour before we were due and did a large circle before heading towards Melbourne.

The sea seemed fine from aboard QE2.

The problem is now the fear of litigation if someone slips & breaks an ankle or worse. It seems to me cruise lines are getting paranoic about litigation from tender passengers. In my time cruising i have thought the tendancy to "play safe" has been overdone, we have missed ports that I would have said were perfectly safe to tender, wonder if the possibility of saving port charges enters into the equation?
