Georg Ots was the first ship of five ships were built by Stocnia Szczecinska, Szczecin in Poland between 1980 and 1982.
These were Georg Ots, Dimitriy Shostakovich, Lev Tolstoy, Konstantin Simonov and Mikhail Suslov.

Georg Ots could accommodate about 216 passengers and 784 unberthed passengers.
Belorussiya class could accommodate 110 passengers in Pullman seats in the Salon.

Two Near Sister ships, Mikhail Sholokov and Konstantin Chernenko were built at the same shipyards and delivered to Far Eastern Shipping Company in 1986.

Does anyone have the information about unberthed passengers seats or photo?

The MIKHAIL SUSLOV currently operates as the OCEAN JEWEL, a gambling ship off the coast of St.Petersburg, Florida. She began operations last October, and interestingly, the ship is anchored several miles off the coast and gamblers/guests are shuttled back and forth on tenders. The ship itself only pulls into St.Petersburg (without passengers) twice a week for water and provisions. This photo was taken last December from the tender going back to town.

Johan C, I hope you have a great cruise. There are photos in the galleries of

Paloma. I don't think this series are ugly at all. besides Ocean Jewel, there are Cruisetalk Galleries by Patrick of Iris, ex Konstantin Simonov, Palmira, ex Lev Tolstoy, before she became the Jasmine, [my pics].

I think they're quite nice as ferries go.

Friends;

Remember that these ladies are built as ferries when you consider them as ugly. I think they look pretty good and that they are very good designs since they operate very successfully as cruise ships after so many years. They also have half sisters which are also successful: Iskenderun, Samsun and Ankara of Turkish Maritime Lines and the Polish Pomerania (got real ugly after modernization and rebuilduing in 1997!) ans Silesia.

I have pictures of Dimitry Shostakovich, Lev Tolstoy and Konstantin Simonov on my webpage:

Someone posted in the web page in 1994 that Georg Ots was transformed to car-ferry quite recentlyt (about 2 years ago). It was made longer, and car deck was built in. Also the first and back doors were added. Currently it is a car ferry.

So - it used not to be a car ferry until its rebuilding into such...

I am not familiar with Georg Ots since she was not used in the Black Sea route. However, I find that hard to believe somehow. All my sources and the form of the ship confirm that it has always been a car ferry. I could not find any source of information proving otherwise. However, it would be very interesting to know if you are right. Anyone (Patrick, maybe) can confirm this?

Thanks.

I´m very familiar With Georg Ots (name came from Estonian singer, that was very known in Finland too)

She was built for Estonian Shipping company (ESCO) and was used in the Tallinn-Helsinki route. she could take only 14 cars, and because that GO was rebuild with cardeck in -93 but it wasn´t lenghtened. After rebuild she could take 150 cars.

later she was chartered to Hansatee (Tallink) and was used in the same route. in year 2000 GO was laid up in tallinn. Now she is owned by St Petersburg Shipping and is in route from St Petersburg to kaliningrad.

it´s kind of funny that she is operating from St Petersburg like her sister Mikhail Suslov

She is a llittle bit longer than she was originally built by adding the sponsons to the stern.

Hi everybody,

sorry for my delay in replying but I have been out of the country for some days.

Johan: You'll recieve your documents soon, they were send out today so you should get them by Wednesday the latest. Wishing a wonderful cruise onboard our Paloma !

As Finn-yards said, the GEORG OTS's car deck has been extended internally. She got some modifications to her exterior appearance like some sponsons, larger back-ramp and a fully enclosed bridge.
Besides the GEORG OTS, only UGO FOSCOLO and RUSS are trading on a regular ferry-service. the others are all employed on either cruises or gambeling cruises.
Nicest one (I'm a bit proud about) is the IRIS, followed by The JASMINE. Both have been very much upgraded and look really nice. Beside that, Mano does a great job with the operation of the vessels.
PALOMA is on the German market during summer season. She is a rather simple ship without finnesse but many people like her just because it is not a luxury product but comfortable with a friendly ambiance.
You can check out on travelpage my file about the Soviet ships. It is not totally up-to-date but can be informative.
For bookings on PALOMA, IRIS or JASMINE you can contact me directly per e-mail if you like.

Patrick

I understand it, but that increase in length is so small and don´t make the ship bigger (I mean public spaces)
Normally when people talk about ships lenghtening thay are talking about extra 20-30 meters

Johan C,

Just FYI, When Paloma was sailed as Dimitriy Shostakovich in the mid 80s.
On Hauptdeck cabin's configuration is almost identical though On Mitteldeck Cabins #480-#499/midships inside cabins and #433-#461/Portside cabins were not sold at the time.
Paloma was renovated in 1991 and modernized in 2000.

In 1982, Lev Tolstoy could carry 404 passengers in 114 cabins.
At the time, Cabins were located on Haupt-Deck, Second Deck(Starboard side only) and Third Deck(only four cabins in the Starboard side).

Thanks for the good information guys! I am still surprised though as to why a ship that is designed and looks exactly like a ferry was not a ferry in the beginning of her life and was converted to one afterwards!

Are you now talking about Georg Ots? Maybe those ships looked like a car-ferries because before GO-class Soviet shipping lines ordered another class of ships from poland. they were known as Pomerania- class and I think all of them was full car-ferries.

IMO Georg ots and hers sisters were designed the same way as Pomerania-class. But If we talk about GO we have to remember that there wasn´t much car-passengers going from Finland to Estonia or other way round, and the predecessor of GO was only for passengers.

heres link to the Pomerania-class of ships:

and Simplon postcards-page of Georg Ots:
