I got this email reply today from a query about what exactly will be happening with Norway...

Without Prejudice

Dear Chris,

We wish to advise that we do not have any information regarding the SS Norway. Kindly visit our website at www.starcruises.com for any latest updates on our cruises.

Yours sincerely,

It's no wonder we're suspicious when they carry on like that.

to be honest, i havent been following the whole norway saga too closely... the long wait has made me lose interest!

anyway ive enjoyed viewing the webcam photos from the other day *(diff thread) and also that fantastic shot posted above.

What i was curious about was the current condition of the norway... the exterior seems to be in very good condition (*considering its been layed up for years?)

There not really much to follow:

Boiler explosion, loss of life
Ship gets laid up
Uneconomical to repair say NCL
Ship towed away
Fate unknown!

The photo is from Lloyd Werft's site. There are others of POA sailing there, but no more of the 2 together.

I remeber when the Europa changed to Star cruises it was close to impossible to get any informations. Just because the people who awnser such querys respond this way, or really do not know anything about the Norway - they are running a cruise line - and Norway is very far from being in their fleet! - does not mean Star does not know, or has not yet decided - it does not even mean that they do not want to give an awnser to that, it might well be that the people in the department where your query ended up just do not know. Also, what would be the disadvantage for NCL or Star if they would tell you that they are going to scrap her? I guess the what happens to Norway and how it is recived by the "public", which in this case consists of some ship enthusiast only - nobody elese cares - is completely insignificant for their business. I could even imagine that one could "sell" this as good news, as they get rid of an old, outdated ship. (but again, nobody will be interested in that)

After seeing Royal Princess off, I was talking to someone and, although he's not that interested in ships, he said Norway is a very popular and well-loved ship so even he knows that. NCL/Star Cruises also know that and so it's obvious they won't say, "We've sold her for scrap" because they might be worried about campaigns to save her like Windsor Castle meaning they have to wait even longer for their beloved money because people like us are causing problems by holding things up. Do ANY companies give a straight answer? I've only dealt with P&O the morning of Canberra's departure and 3 people at head office knew nothing about her leaving because there'd been no statement. There was one a couple fo hours later but I wouldn't have put it past them to have tried to sneak her out. After all, they too must have known her fate long before she even arrived back from her farewell cruise so why keep quiet about it?

It's a standard operating procedure of corporate management: disinformation. It derives from the military mentality of the "need-to-know" basis, and in management's opinion, most people do not have a need to know. It's a practice that walks hand-in-hand with what we in the IT business call FUD, or "fear, uncertainty and doubt," which is being used more and more as a marketing tool.

Your photo of NORWAY and POA is an excellent
example of: The sublime and the ridiculous! I
have never seen an uglier bow than POA's.

There was a ship arrived at Southampton while we waited for Royal Princess to leave called Morning Meridian (think it's a cargo ship or container) that looked just like PoA but smaller. Swap the funnels over and no one would know the difference! LOL!

BigUFan, nothing would surprise me. But they are so annoying the way they keep their mouths glued shut.

Chris, who did you contact? You know that they don't have to answer any of your queries (even if they knew)...true? I am still accredited as a photojournalist and I can tell you that even us who have worked or are still working in the media are sometimes left in the dark. So unless you know someone personally in the organization that is privy to what's about to happen, you have buckleys of a chance of finding out what you want. I guess there is no harm in trying though.

Cheers

"We Wish" Implies that they are speaking on behalf of the organisation, rather then "I am not sure sir, but will find out for you".

I just don't like the secrecy is all...

A wonderful image of the Norway. I always thought she looked best when photographed without the tenders. Too bad the image is spoiled by that ugly white whale at the bottom.

Wow, there is just simply so much that is associated with that graceful image of Norway sailing off to sea. She represents many of our adventures, emotions, experiences, "firsts", you name it. She was the first image I had of cruising when I was just a tiny kid looking through my mother and father's 1980 Norway voyage just after her conversion. All of the images I have of them out on deck, at the buffet, the pool, the cocktail parties, are what created my first images of cruising.

I then developed my own experiences by sailing aboard her twice later in my life. I would never have exchanged them for anything in the world. I cherish every last moment I had walking throughout her decks, along the top decks, gazing up along the huge funnels, standing beneath her stately mast as her three mast whistles blasted sailing from St. Thomas . . . I could go on . . .

Farewell Norway . . . .

Well said Steve! Unfortunately I did not have the chance to sail on the NORWAY, but i was close to booking a cruise on her right before her boilers blew!

I would seriously give up anything for a chance to sail on her now.....

I wonder where the big tenders are - an indication perhaps that she will never see active service again as she would need them is there was any possibility of this given the often smaller ports in Asia, the best anyone can hope for is some sort of static role similar to the Oriana 1, not that she has had particlar success.

In October 1998, We have noticed in the Magazine that New Europa to be handed over to Hapag Lloyd on August '99 and Megastar Asia*(ex-Europa) to be operated on cruises out of Singapore beginning on June '99.

*Actually Europa renamed SuperStar Europa and operated from Laem Chabang(Bangkok) on October '99.

I never did get to sail on the Norway, but I was a member of New York's chapter of the World Ship Society, and they had a luncheon on board for the farewell crossing. Although I was rather disappointed with the state I found her in, I feel lucky to have been able to walk the decks of at least one of the great liners. Now I've got to get to Long Beach before something bad happens to the Queen Mary.

I sailed Norway once for a week the onboard history lectures were great. And I have "sailed" Queen Mary three times. If you go get there for a horn blowing 12:00noon 3:00pm and 6:00pm I believe its really a neat feeling standing on her bow while she sings almost like you are sailing away. and I swear that the ship feels like its rocking. And as a hotel guest you get the run of the ship at night get to places you should probaly not be during the day. Highly recomend city side room suite if wallet allows.Go before its too late!
