Back when I was in the energy business in the '70s, I remember that a crude carrier was just that. Large humongous tanks, few in number, and generally going across the entire beam of the vessel. This design mutated into very-large and ultra-large CCs which were essentially more of the same. It is loaded at a crude terminal such as Valdez, and many in the Middle East. It transports its cargo either to refineries or to a terminal for further transport by pipeline.

A product carrier carries refined product from refineries to (typically) urban terminals, where the product is either stored in tanks, or shipped to users. It may have 30 or more smaller tanks representing multiple products, such as jet fuel, industrial bunker fuel, gasoline and such. Product carriers are smaller than crude carriers so that they may operate in smaller ports, and may carry more flexible product mixes.

And yes, product carriers typically carry refined petroleum products from overseas refineries to North American, Asian and European cities as well.

Am I correct here, my information is more than 30 years old?

Interestingly, between my airlines time and going back to sea I worked ashore for Hendy International Co., based in Los Angeles. We operated a most interesting product carrier. It was the "Angelo Petri" which was a U.S. flag ship that carried bulk wine! It sailed between the U.S. West Coast, U.S. East Coast and the Gulf ports. Stainless steel tanks kept the wine clean and fresh and we never had a problem getting a crew!

Jerry

For Cambodge: Hendy was owned by John McCone whose office was just down the hall!

Here is wine carrier Cesare. One automatically assumes a product tanker carries refined oil products, they usually do, but there are other things. Looking at Cesare, I don't think one can actually tell from an outside view, they all look similar.

I remember that some years ago there was an orange juice tanker sailing on the line between Brazil and Antwerpen. AFAIR the ship was called Orange Blossom.

I saw her once in the Left Bank Port here.
