Looking for stuff in the basement last night and I found some old National Geographic magazines from the '60s. I am sure that others remember them as a great source of ship advertisements so I thought I would scan a few:

Moore McCormack Ad - 1963

Larger Version

American Export Ad- 1963

Larger Version

French Line Ad- 1963

Larger Version

I've got more, let me know if you want to see them.

Very nice pictures, thanks for sharing them. I noticed the air rifles that seem to have been available as recreation on Constitution- I've heard that in the early days, the Carnival ships had these too- even up until some of the newbuilds.

Skeet shooting, or trap shooting, was a common activity on most cruise ships through the 1980s, when it was determined to be environmentally unfriendly to the oceans, just like golf ball driving off the fantail.

National Geographic was always one of the best magazines for ocean liner/cruise adverts. I remember looking for a certain July 1962 issue in an old book shop when I was a teenager. The ad-an all color ad featured QE1 and 'Cunard's Vacation Island'. There is a wonderful broadside view of QE1 in New York as well as a few color shots (all small pics) of QM1's 1st Class dining room and deck scenes. Cunard, American President, Matson, USL P&O etc. ads were usually featured in this magazine. These ads are wonderful glimpses into a long gone form of ocean travel.

Last time we moved house, I'm afraid I just binned great piles of them I did save some of the Geographical mags though, not sure if there is similar in them, but I think they are only from the early 80s.

The more the merrier Joe.. they are great to look at and I'd love to see more.

The good ones for liner ads are from the 1930s through the late 1960s (the car ads are fabulous as well). The 1950s and 60s ads seemed to be the best as more people were traveling plus some of the ads were really beautiful-literally calling you to the exotic South Seas, Far East etc.

I have literally hundreds of National Geographic ocean liner ads, going back to the 1930s. If anyone has a request for a particular ship, steamship line, or date, let me know and I'll see if I can share it.

Thanks Joe and others for sharing these great old
ads from NG. I remember them too as a child. The
French Line was always represented.....Liberte,
Ile de France, Flandre. I remember the US Line
also. Any more that could be shared would be
appreciated.

Excellent ads, Joe. Though it's very sad seeing ones for the France at the start of her career knowing she's reached the end now. But a great way to remember the old girl.

Many years ago, I found a set of binded NG in a second hand bookshop.
One of them had a color picture of QE1, just showing the bit between the funnel, with a man looking out by the still open shell door.
It was fascinating!
I was looking for ssFrance, but the binding stopped in 1961
