I looked over the Plisson book in the QM2 book shop last week and it does offer some beautiful pics of the ship. I prefer John Maxtone-Graham's version as it seems to offer more history and better text. New copies of Maxtone-Graham's book are often available on Ebay for around $25.00.

I have both books. Maxtone-Graham's book is the more definitive book on QM2, filled with more text and information about the ship; this is a close to a "builders book" as there is.

Plisson's book is more artistic, with many beautiful full-spread photos of the ship and various areas on board. There is some informative text as well, but not as extensive as the first book.

You probably need both! Photographically the Plisson book is probably better.

The Plisson book also covers the maiden arrival in NY on April 22, 2004,...EXCELLENT photos.

I agree with Malcolm, the photos in the Plisson book are better. JMG's book is wonderful (although I was miffed to see that he slighted NORMANDIE by not mentioning her in a photo caption), but, what can I say,...I'm a picture guy!

The Maxtone Graham book was of course rushed out to coincide with the maiden cruises. Plisson had the advantage of not racing against the clock.

It's not surprising that Plisson book is superior photografically. Plisson is what we call in french a "peintre de la Marine", which can be translated by Navy painter. It's a very prestigious job, existing since the monarchy period and the navy only selects the finest french painters (and now photographs). The most experienced of these artists are given the official military rank of "capitaine de corvette", lieutenant commander in english (I think) so that they may have a full access to almost everything.

There are regular exhibitions of their works and even if mostly war ships are represented, it's always spectacular to admire for people who likes sea and ships.

One thing I hated about that book was the lack of photos of her Southampton arrival and maiden voyage. I haven't looked at it since getting it a while ago but if I remember rightly it went from leaving St Nazaire to arriving in New York. Apart from that minor grumble, the book is excellent for the photos alone.

Hey Y'all....Have not yet seen Plisson's book, probably pick up a copy when next on----Hawaii Feb/Mar 06. John M-G's book should have been in cabin gift for Maiden voyage (along with something from Gary Buchannan) but got left behind in Soton. However we did find 2 great B+W photos by Plisson (5ftX18in) showing QM2 at Liberty Island and just off the pier(with Concorde).Cheers Chateausmith.

I purchased this book some time ago (August). I loved the pictures of the ship. Outstanding. I wonder if it might be a companion book to the documentary, as the subtitle is the same.

In case anyone else might be interested in ordering it online, the ISBN number is 0-8109-5613-6.
