Is anyone able to tell me what has happened to the library please? It was there in 1963, it was in the same place in 1998.. but no longer shows on current plans - that area is now.. a casino.

Surely they can not possibly have done away with a library completely? Even if just a couple of cupboards. There must be something.. anyone know?

Pam, you'd better bring your own reading material! I wouldn't be surprised if there are no books left anywhere--very unfortunate, but slot machines make more revenue than book shelves!

Hi Pam,

I made 2 cruises (2000 and 2002) on Monterey. In one of these cruises (can't remeber wich one) they were converting the library into a small casino. Monterey have some pax spaces wich are very difficult to find; The disco (always closed); the gym and the casino are not easy to find: only die hard ship explorers like me find them so it made sense that they moved the casino

It's a long Way downstairs, at the lowest Deck, where no Passenger Cabins are.

as a child i traveled all over the world with my grdparents we always went by ship because my grandma wouldnt fly.frequently i was only child aboard and that was where i developed my love of reading,i think it is sad that ships librarys are falling by the wayside afterall where do you find a better atmosphere for reading than on a deckchair in the shade or in a quite corner of the lounge.i guess i am getting old because i seem to value peace, quiet, and a good book more and more as tim e goes by.i remeber my grandpa reading me dr suess books in the queen marys long gallery.

So maybe the original bookcase is still in place? In reality there are now casino machines in the library!

Thanks for all the replies. It does say in the amenities list that there is a library.... but I wondered if that had just never been removed from when she did.

So it seems the original 'bookcase' remains as it was, and the casino built around incorporating it. Very peaceful for a quiet read though I suspect the cupboard will only be open for a couple of hours a day when the casino is closed.. we'll find out anyway.

Yes, Johan C, aft there are 3 decks below the main pax accommodation, with the Gym, Cinema and Disco/Arcade... if open, perhaps the fish dance along down there alongside

I knew it. I had checked out PEEL, APC and MSC's deck plans before posting. I was talking about Monterey before being converted in 2000 or 2002 for regardng to John C post.

I know you did, I didn't say you didn't. Just a bit of extra information for others who don't and seeing it in picture format, rather than a bunch of words, brings it more to life.

For anyone slightly interested, I now have some larger plans and the library is marked. Just a cupboard...

Despite what the deck plans say, even the ones given out aboard, the 'old' Library is no longer the Casino, but a Library once again, come Card Room come Internet Room It's a lovely area. The Casino is now plonked in the middle of the Palm Terrace [where the sets of 4 chairs around tables are shown above].

Starboard side Palm Terrace with casino to left and Library ahead:-

Card Room, where you can just see the beginning of the 2 Internet Stations to left:-

The Library 'Cupboard' in the corner. I assume this is original and has never been moved? The square sticker on the wall by the door, denotes a WI-FI hotspot, these are dotted around Monterey in various places; so she has moved into the C21:-

To Port, the previous Card Room, then Casino, is now a Boutique.

Pam
