We're all familiar with the NORWAY's beautiful blue hull. But did you know that NCL originally planned to operate her with an all-white hull, to match the other ships in their fleet? Here is a faded news clipping from 1979, showing how she would have looked; wisely, NCL decided to give her some color:

A preliminary brochure from 1979 has a huge artist's rendering of her in white, also, but the image unfolds to nearly 4 feet in length and cannot be scanned!

She did look great in the origional NCl blue livery, but I wish they hadn't changed it later on and darkened it.
That's interesting though, just think we'd be calling her "White Lady"!!!

Wow, Rich! I've never heard about this before, thanks for letting us know.

You almost gave me a heart attack! It's not that the "Norway" would have looked too bad in the white livery, but she's so much more beautiful with a blue hull. I'm glad they kept the paint scheme from her "France" days, which accenturated the sheer lines and even superimposed them. It added to the ship's grace.

I prefered her in black (and also blue) - but it is not that awful. She is obvioulsy too beautiful.

I'm shocked. I thought I had everything NCL ever printed for the Norway. One of my earliest brochures include a 4 foot fold out but with a blue hull. I didn't know they ever printed one with a white hull. Can you at least post the cover of the fold out you have so I know what I'm looking for? I agree with everyone else; the blue hull was a good idea. I also understand that early on they considered eliminating the forward funnel and replacing the aft funnel with something similar to the other NCL ships at the time. Yikes.

Fantastic pic, Rich. She does look very different without the darker hull. But she still looks great. I'm learning new things every day. I never knew NCL originally had white hulls. When did they go the colour they are now? I'm guessing the funnel design is Star Cruises' imput seeing as they seem to be the same as theirs.

Patsy, the hulls are still white - Norway was the exception - they are just obstructed by 'hull art'. Speaking about hull art in this thread...or better not...

Yes, they were always white hulls (SUNWARD, SKYWARD, SOUTHWARD, STARWARD, SUNWARD II.) For years they were known as the "White Ships" when the NORWAY came out.

LOL! Course they are. My brain's clogged up with this cold. Though with the graffiti hulls it is easy to get confused these days. So before Star Cruises came along, did they just buy ships or have their own newbuilds complete with their style of funnel?

NCL did build some of their own: DREAMWARD & WINDWARD came out in '92 & '93, and were later stretched. NCL also built NORWEGIAN SKY (originally planned to be a sister to COSTA VICTORIA, which would have been called COSTA OLYMPIA.) They built NORWEGIAN SUN; I forget when Star came into the picture, around that time I guess, and implemented their tremendous new-build program.

NCL had hull art in the early 1970s as well. The sunburst and stripe on their ship's hulls were one of their trademarks for many years.
