Presently she is called Athena and sails for Classic International. They also have the Funchal, Arion and the Princess Danae - which to my understanding is leaving the fleet for being deplyed in the German market.

Dambrosi........
I think it's the Stockholm of 1948, not 1956. She
is really quite unrecognizable from what she once
was. She defies her age.

What gives here age away is her sheer forward and aft and the double row of portholes common on some older ships. Her superstructure and 'duck tail' stern are the more modern touches.

I did an Cruise in the Eastern Med in October 2005 on the Athena.

It is an very nice Ship with big Cabins, good Food and Service from an friendly Crew.

Classic International is an good Company.

I would book again, no Question.

This Year we have in Germany the Princess Danae, from the German Tour Operator Vivamare (www.vivamare.de), but as an Ship of Classic International.

I think and hope, she will be succesful and as i heard, her first Cruises runs well.

Thank you Onno, nice photo of her...I'm sorry, I guess I did'nt make myself clear in the post. This should be the same ship that had the collision with the ANDREA DORIA 50 yrs. ago this July.
If this is how she looks now....WOW.

Onno is being kind by showing an aging lady from her best side (forward portion.) Her aft section was somewhat spoiled by the addition of a huge stability sponson. However, she is still a fascinating ship which I would love to experience some day!

Goodmorning Rich...what an odd thing to put on the stern of a lovely ship.....so strange, the last time I saw something close to that was when my late husband and I were on the CROWN MONARCH in '93. That sponson does'nt look good on this lady. But, I'm with you on this one. I would love to sail her. Thank you for posting that photo.

Me Thinks as well.

Just letting go of the fact that she was the Stockholm and as such had a great curved stern, the duck tail is an interesting shape especially how it is “melted” with the stern shape, from close by it looks fascinating (just like the head of a 747)

Me hopes NCL does as good a job with the BigU as the old Stockholm was turned into Athena.

Realistically I think an “Athena” styled conversion is the only one that can be applied to Big U. Somehow I strongly doubt NCL has the character to restore and treat her as the classic liner/national monument she is, NCL is not stupid enough either to throw tons of money to convert/twist the ship to compete with a modern mega ship (they are sensible enough to build a completely new ship that suits their needs from the start)

It is either an Athena conversion or easy money by selling her for scrap and prevent a competing company to get their hands on an American build hull.

And we must not forget (I know I posted that quite often recently) that the conversion of the Stockholm has only been done due to tax exepmtions in Italy at that time for rebuiling ships compared to building new ships.
We can not conclude form this refit that a refit of the United States would make sense economically.

I hadn’t noticed you mentioned it before. Then the scrap option will be the only one left

The Ingalls shipyard in Pascagoula Missisippi has some good friends in congress that can send them business. NCL also has good friends in congress and when they are introduced the BigU just might get re-engined superstructure rebuilt there; hotel system installed at Lloyd Werft.

It is called influence peddling and pork barrelling.
Mississippi is one of the poorest states of the Union and needs the jobs, congressmen need the kickbacks and votes from Joe Lunchbucket, just like Ernst said, the Stockholm to Athena was to keep people off the undemployment lines, and the politicians rich.

Michelangelo and Rafaello were done under the same circumstances.
