In a very sad state.. even more so now. sslewis set off to catch some photos of Freedom of the Seas.. but, in his words:-

"Tried to get Freedom from 7am ferry(Portsmouth-Fishbourne). But it was delayed by stupid beer truck! Welcome England on a Bank Holiday!

However, the weather cleared by 9.30am and I found this on a trail near Newport......"

I've never heard of the Ryde. What type of vessel was she?

Lovely pictures Louy, I’m so glad you totally ignored the “keep off” sign!
Talk about dying of ships, this one totally fits my idea of nature claiming back mans creation.

In better times?!

I don’t understand why it’s decaying, how hard can it be preserving such a small ship.
If I had the chance I would buy it and turn it into a permanent home plus studio.

Hard enough - we still talk about a lot of money. Just look at all those associations preserving old trains - even that is difficult and a lot are struggling to achieve that. And this ships requires certainly much more efforts than one steam locomotive. Also, the ship enthusiast community is much smaller than the train enthusiasts community - one of 'our' major problems.

It doesn’t have to be preserved in working order an empty shell which exterior is reconstructed into it’s original looks and the interior can be just as modern as one wants it to be. It wont be anything more then the floating houses we see in the canals of Amsterdam (and mind you there are flouting homes that are much more expensive then converting the Ryde into a home / studio. If there are people who live in converted train coaches, converted water towers, old marine bases, then the Ryde would be perfect to convert.

Such conversion project would be a labor of love, just like some people by an old car or house and restore it in their own time.
If I had such a ship laying abandoned for years in my hometown I would definitely squat it with a couple of my mates.

She would be a lovely houseboat!
I did not want to say that people should not try to save e.g. this nice ship - but I am not that surprised to see it in this state. (O.K. a bit maybe - some places would give a lot to have such a ship as attraction - and there are not that many around anymore)

The website linked to above has a statement [2004] saying:-

"Now, 60 years after her D-Day service, she has been examined and a full rebuild to incorporate all the modern maritime safety requirements is viable. with the ownership and formation of a society she could steam again and carry passengers on charters and excursions for many years to come."

..however she still looks pretty well past that to me. There is a video of that survey, but was taking too long to d/l so I haven't watched it.

Thanks for the photos Louy and for posting Pam. What a nice looking paddle steamer. It is a real pity she's in such a state. If she can't be restored to her heyday looks for steaming around the coasts, I would say Onno's idea of a houseboat/studio on a Dutch canal (or any canal for that matter) to be an excellent idea. Need to find out if she's for sale and how much to restore.
