Something I've been searching for since quite a while are pictures of Costa Riviera during her scrapping. After seeing the BRB-demolition pics I hope some of you can help me out with this one?

Here it is

Unlike NCL, when Costa Riviera's black water tanks vomited 'you know what' all over her lower decks, she was sent to Alang in a New York Minute.

My late husband and I sailed on both the COSTA RIVIERA and the GALILEO..she became the MERIDIAN later...I miss those ships. The MERIDIAN became the SUN VISTA, caught fire and sank not for from Phuket, Thailand....wonder how much of it might still be together after the undersea quake in 2004??

The Meridian's rebuilding for Chandris' Celebrity division was incredible. I cruised on her in 1991 and she was a completely new ship internally. I preferred her Chandris profile but she was still a beautiful ship while w/Celebrity.

This bow is just beautiful - the above posted picture - as sad as it is - is a very interesting angle. (sad- but also amazing to see such a big vessel 'on the beach'....) At least one ship with a similar bow is still around.

Deborah,

Of course I don't know the state of the wreck but there are 99.99% of probabilities that the quake itself made zero damage to the wreck (not rusted enough and the ashore buildings in that area were not really affected by the tremors themselves) and 100% chances that the tsunami itself made no damage at all, considering the depth where it is now and that tsunamis become dangerous in shallow waters and shores only.

The wreck is actually near Penang in Malaysia, not Phuket. It is sitting upright and is sometimes visited by divers. I understand one dive tour company is willing to take you out to her if you are experienced enough to do a deepwater wreck dive. She was also lovely to sail on as the Sun Vista - what a pity she sank due to bad shipmanagement. I also sailed on teh Costa Riveira - one of the most fun cruises I ever did.

She ended upright on her hull???? That's wonderful, in a sense. If I knew how to dive, I'd go right there to see what she looks like.

John(Aureol),
we look look forward for more info!
It's nice to hear that she's upright just like Bianca C(Grenada) which sank after a fire too.
According to earlier reports she had sank stern first after capsizing so I expected much damage.

Wasn't it American Family Cruises who added that horrid little deck house above the bridge?

That was a lame duck of an undertaking.

Yes, AFC added this as part of a new fitness center placed above the bridge. Here's a photo I took of the revamped ship on Dec. 16, 1993, when she was re-christened:

Thanks, Rich. Cool shot.

I actually didn't mind the dark hull; it was the eagle that ended up looking like a parakeet that I always hated.

Bruce certainly missed the boat on that venture.

Was that Miami Rich? Lovely photo.

I don't actually think the 'deck house' up top makes much of a difference.. in fact I did not even take note it was there until the comments of it being an addition were made. Do you have a photo without it Rich? [silly question probably ]

I've put together an album of photos I took aboard AMERICAN ADVENTURE:

I recall being very disappointed with the ship--I had previously sailed on her twice as the COSTA RIVIERA, and felt that public space for adults had been severely restricted, to provide more areas for kids.

Very nice Rich.. is that not what AMC was about though? fun for all the family? the kids rooms do look quite large though in comparison, so perhaps too big. The showroom looks nice, but I expect one couldn't see a lot of the stage when it was full in there?

One Ct'er has a lovely video clip of her sailing as Costa Riviera... hopefully it will be online sometime soon'ish to watch. She certainly looks so sleek and a real liner 'of the seas' when sailing.

Here's a photo of the COSTA RIVIERA from a similar angle, before the upper bridge wings and 'wheel house' were added. Photo taken at Ocho Rios, Jamaica in September 1991:

Thanks, Rich,...interesting pics.

Pam, I think the photo of the ship before the addition of the upper bridge wings and deck house really shows how much better she looked without them. Having seen the ship many times before and after the refit, I guess I just focused in on it.

It's always reminded me of one of the modifications to Aquitania's bridge. When Cunard plopped a tiny, brown wheelhouse on top of her upper bridge wings, it ruined her lovely, forward superstructure.

I heard that this wheelhouse has been added to allow her (or him?) to go trough the Panama canal. If I remember right it was an issue that the ugly addition on the forecastle obstructed the view to the bow from the original bridge which is why this wheelhouse and the wings were required.

Ernst, that's a very plausible explanation, although COSTA RIVIERA did transit the Canal several times before the addition. I took the following photo from the original bridge of the RIVIERA in December, 1988--as you can see, the bow of the ship is out of sight!

LOVE those interiors no matter what Linnerich, they're excellent. I enjoyed them. Seems like you always managed to find time to take photos. Just like PamM..and since it's still going to be awhile before I can take another cruise. I know I can keep coming here to look for great shots. Thank you.

With all of this talk about COSTA RIVIERA, I decided to create an album of her interiors and decks. These were taken during my cruises on her in 1986 and 1988:

http://www.travelserver.net/travelpage/aspgallery/view_ad.asp?Ad_ID=2582

For those of you who never got to see her, this hopefully will give you a favorable impression. For those of you who were fortunate enough to board her, enjoy the memories!

Thanks all so much for the great pictures. The Costa Riviera was my first ship, which I cruised as a kid in 1998. With the ship, now also that itinerary is gone- visiting ports in Lebanon, Syria and Israel. I have quite some photos of that cruise, soon I will scan them and put them online. I remember it as a great ship with a unique atmosphere. You could open your portholes and peek outside- even at the lower decks.. A true ship.

If anyone has more info or photos, please don't hesitate to keep them coming.
