Desirod...thank you SO much for posting this fond rembrance of a wonderful ship. It brought back so many memories for me as I have loved this ship since the first moment I set foot on her as a child. Norwegians and Norwegian Americans felt they had "come home" when they boarded and I'd stop speaking English the moment my foot touch the deck. And I'm guessing that I was onboard in those October 1963 photos as I believe I remember she only came to NY once that month. I made 6 crossings on her and 1 on the old Swedish Gripsholm.

I ran all over her decks, sneaked up from Cabin Class and ran up those lovely stairs in first class and I have never forgotten the terrific storms she weathered so well...my Mom and I never missed a meal! She was an incredibly sturdy old gal.

She was especially beloved by my family as my Mother had emigrated to this country on her when only a young woman of 20 or so.

A lovely moment of nostalgia for me....and a few tears as well. When she sailed away for the last time, under her own power, most of Norway and many in America cried. She can still bring tears to my eyes after all this time.

Thank you, Penny

Wonderfull ship. And maybe she is afterall the best Atlantic liner ever. not the Queens not Normandie not the Nieuw Amsterdam. No this small elegant litle Norwegian liner. Withe here gray hull two mast and two smockestacks. plouding the Atlantic with no air. Just doing here work where she was build fore.

Let's name here the most importened Trans Atlantic Liner of the 20th century.

Greetings Ben.
Penny that where some touching memories.

Thank you Ben for your kind thoughts about this fine old ship. So few people remember her now as she didn't have the glamour of so many others of her day. But she had her own quiet elegance and was certainly reliable no matter what the weather might be.

The North Atlantic beat her up year round for 45 years yet the last time I crossed on her, before she sailed away for the last time, she still retained that special something that endeared her to all who were fortunate to have known her. I doubt many will see her as important as the Queens or Normandie, but as one who loves her still, I thank you for that tribute. She was a special little ship.

I have just returned from a wonderful trip on the Queen Mary 2. Yet in the midst of all that beauty and elegance, I found myself sitting in a window seat, watching the ocean rush by, and remembering how that same thing felt on Stavangerfjord . For a moment in time I was that little girl again, in her favorite window seat, so filled with wonder at the beauty of the ocean, and so confident that her little ship would keep her safe.

Cheers, Penny
