Hi Folks

Could someone please fill me in on what happened to the QM2 when it struck a submerged object leaving Ft Lauderdale for South America in February last year? I was saddened to hear some of what happened when we were on board the QM2 recently. I think that the incident occurred just before Commodoore Warwick and Kim were to sail to Honolulu. We had spoken to Kim on an earlier cruise and she was so excited about the maiden call. She said that she felt she was "taking everyone on board home." I thought how sad this was to happen just before this cruise and before Commodore Warwick retired.

I know that you have to be careful with ship talk so I was hoping that you could tell me what actually happened.

Apologies for asking this question as I am sure you would have discussed it at the time, but I was unable to find mention of the incident in your archives.

Thanks, Elizabeth

From what I read, QM2 came to close to the side of the Ft Lauderdale channel and a POD (the hanging motors w/propellers attached) was damaged in the process. The inoperative POD was inspected, shut down and QM2 resumed her voyage to South America at a reduced speed w/the three operating PODS. All the scheduled Caribbean port calls were cancelled and that portion of the cruise became a long non-stop voyage between Florida and Rio-angering many passengers. Passengers were refunded their entire cruise fare (for that portion of the voyage) which many thought was overly generous compensation. It was a public relations nightmare that may or may not have forced the Commodore into early retirement.

All I can remember off the top of my head is that while sailing in the port one of her pods hit something underwater. This resulted in her having to drop her ports of call between Ft Lauderdale and Rio to keep her schedule now that she only had three pods. Because of this passengers tried to get refunded compleatly and all Cunard offered was a 50% refund. In turn passengers threatend to not get off the ship unless they were compleatly refunded. I don't remember much else.

Sorry for the lame answer.

The pilot was in control of the QM2 at the time although technically the Master is always responsible for the vessel. I heard rumour that the second in command predicted the event (possibly seeing the obstruction on the radar?) but it was too late for the pilot to act. I assume Warwick was not found to be at fault himself?

The QM2 has experienced a few technical problems in her short career, including a bow-thruster door jamming open, necessitating the ship cruise at reduced speed and delaying her arrival at Southampton on one occasion..

Thank you very much for the information. I felt so sorry for Commodore Warwick and Kim. Apparently television reports of the angry passengers screaming at the commodore were shown. It was such a shame for this to happen just before Commodore Warwick retired. He had such a distinguished career at sea. Anywhere else in the world it would have been the pilots fault.

We were sorry that we were not on that cruise. We love days at sea and to be given 50% refund!

Wasn't this incident the reason for the bridge wings being extended?

Actually it was a 100% refund for the Ft. Lauderdale-Rio portion.

It was about 6.5 months ahead of the Commodore's retirement: Jan 17th if I recall correctly. He retired July 31.
