Last Week's Question
Which former Swedish-American liner of 1966 is alive and well sailing today as a cruise ship? What is her current name and what was done in 1978 that forever changed her appearance?

Answer - The KUNGSHOLM although currently laid up under the name MONA LISA will return to service under charter to RCCL as the SCHOLAR SHIP to operate University at Sea classes 6 months of the year and as the OCEANIC II for new RCCL subsidiary Pulmantour the rest of the year.

Anyone want to fill in the rest for those who are new and don't know?

Her forward funnel was cut down and the aft funnel heightened into a slimmer shape, thereby ruining her well-balanced profile.

Agree 100%, Rich.

She had a beautiful profile until then.

I'd say it's safe to say that she's the only liner to ever have one and a half funnels,...

Also, cabins were placed in one of the promenade decks and the structure was extended aft - also ruining her well balanced lines.

I certainly hope that some of her fans establish the 'Save the SS KUNGSHOLM ' Foundation to raise awareness to restore and preserve this ship in Sweden by way of the SS Rotterdams' example.

Apart from the fact that she was the M/S Kungsholm, I am afraid interest for preservation here in Sweden is minimal, to say the least!

As mentioned above, extra cabins were added and several public rooms were eliminated. I think 1-2 public rooms were added to the deck above. Her capacity was increased from the SAL usual 450 to a much higher number. This was all such a pity for one of the most beautiful ships of all time.

According to the most recent information, Mona Lisa is going to Pullmantur as Oceanic II. Other than the utterly uncreative name, it seems like a good fit.

No word on which ship will be going to ScholarShip.

The same ship. OCEANIC II will only be sailing for Pullmantur this June, July & August (7-night cruises between Athens and Istanbul.)

After that, she becomes the SCHOLAR SHIP and is chartered for at least two world cruises.
