I recently 're-discovered' this evocative photo in my files, and wanted to share it with you. Here we see Italia's CONTE DI SAVOIA, east-bound in mid-Atlantic, viewed from the deck of the west-bound REX in 1937:

The Italians loved to bring their ships as close together as possible when passing--it was great PR for both passengers and crew, although somewhat dangerous when you consider their combined speeds of nearly 60 knots! But this is a dramatic view of a beautiful ship, and you can sense the excitement of the event which only lasted about a half minute!

Great image! What a spectacular sight that would be. That is pretty risky to bring these two ships so close together...I wonder how much each vessel is affected by the other's wake...might have gotten a little bumpy. Thanks for sharing!

I also have this shot,...incredible. She was such a beautiful ship; such a shame what happened to both her and REX.

Years ago, I was on Seaward and, at about two in the morning, we sailed past Norway. There was only about a quarter mile between the ships and it was fantastic to see Norway all lit up. Never again.

The Italians were famous for their dramatic, close "fly-bys" of ships in mid-ocean, and on nearly every crossing you could count on seeing another vessel pass by. Here's a view of the ANDREA DORIA, seen from sister-ship CRISTOFORO COLOMBO in 1955:

Excellent! Thanks Rich. Wish such things still happened today. Well they do sort of, but nowhere near as close or as fast.

We all saw photos of the tandem QE2/QM2 crossing. The ships quite a way apart. Here's as close as Oriana got to Oceana at the beginning of July when crossing Biscay.

A comment from Scottylass aboard Aurora a few weeks back:-

quote:
"...as we were having lunch Arcadia passed by, it was brilliant as the two ships were quite close, everyone was lining the decks on Arcadia, and lots on Aurora had their Union Jacks waving too ha ha, ofcourse the horns were blowed as we passed by, a nice start to the cruise."

Goes to show that even today's passenger still enjoy seeing other fleetmates pass by at sea.

And those were moving slowly in a port area. Can you imagine the damage of two express liners colliding at sea, each going tutta forza ?!

Conte di Savoia was an incredibly beautiful ship-much better looking than her fleetmate Rex IMO. Her exterior was so sleek and modern w/her all-new full length promenade windows, perfectly proportioned funnels, cruiser stern and rounded bow etc. etc. Thanks for sharing!

I agree entirely--here's another view of her for those who may not be familiar with this often overlooked liner:

Must be an Italian thing - recall a trip on Sea Princess (1) in the South Pacific when we met the old Fairstar just after the Sitmar "merger" a sail past was arranged but the Fairstar turned in and came past much too close, Sammy Bradford commanding the Sea P and he was able to tell the Italian Captain what he thought from the bridge wing with no megaphone ! Many pax amused but it took Sammy a few days to get over it. He later said that he could tightened the Fairstar's loose rivets just by leaning over - it was also reported that he continued to refer to the Fairstar as the rustiest thing he had ever sailed by and would never sail on. From memory I don't believe he ever did set foot on her.

Is it just me, or does she look quite a bit like the SS US in that picture?

There is a certain resemblance in the sweep of the Promenade Deck windows, and the double windows around her rounded superstructure forward. Even the forecastles are similar.

I agree completely. I will say though, from some angles the Rex was gorgeous! This book that I have shows 2 pictures taken at a 3/4 aft angle looking towards the bow, and they are just so beautiful! Her lines in that picture and her sheer make her look much more beautiful.

Still in every way the Conte Di Savoia is much more beautiful. Both inside and out.

This pictures clearly shows the four large 'verandah' promenade windows lower in her hull. This was a unique design feature of this fantastic Italia ship. I also love the vent openings on those perfect funnels from this angle.

For more information on her Frank O. Braynard has a wonderful paperback book on these two Italia superliners.

Yes, those large openings were down on C-Deck, where the 3rd Class public rooms were located--Dining Room, Smoke Room and Ladies Lounge. This block of public rooms was surrounded by the 3rd Class Promenade, which otherwise would be practically an interior space if not for these large openings.

Liberte is not far fetched - wasn't there some sort of collaboration between the Germans and the Italians?

Yes, it was called the 'Axis', during WWII !!!
I think the shipbuilding resemblances were mere coincidences, however.

I am pretty sure that there was a know-how transfer - but I am not sure whether it was about the machinery only or also the hull-shape.

Are all the port holes on her in the photo real? Some look like just white spots painted onto her hull.
