At this time I can 'reveal' that Pam and other CT members are presently aboard QE2 celebrating the 40th anniversary of her launch.

I have been asked by Pam to post this question:

What is different about QE2 today?

Do you mean specifically today (Sept. 21st) while she's in Liverpool, or do you mean in general (nowadays) today?

She is 40 years and one day old.

She was christened 40 ago yesterday.

Am I on the right track?

I do not know more that you - but my feeling is that it's not about an anniversary.

Its the first time that a Cunard Queen has been able to tie up in Cunard's original home of Liverpool and opposite the Cunard building.

BBC Video Here (No log-in reqired)

It's nice to see that the 'people' can get a reasonable view of the ships without too many high fences and gates.

The answers are all wrong. It was something specific in Liverpool yesterday and nothing to do with the landing stage.

Pam says to tell you all there are more cruise talkers talking on this trip than cruise critics or something. I spoke to Cambodge last night and he's enjoying it too.

Which one? Pam tormented me last night by phoning so I could hear the fireworks. They were loud! In fact, she's been making me jealous ever since she left last Saturday in that glorious weather.

Okay another clue. I'm really surprised this doesn't appear to have been mentioned anywhere in the media. It was a one-off (apparently) and to do with Cunard's past.

My new guess would be that something that was aboard her has been donated or left in Liverpool somewhere. Perhaps the bell from Aquitania? Or maybe a famous piece of artwork?

Now am I on the right track?

No it's not that, Russ. It was something they put ON the ship just for yesterday.

Indeed. She was given permission to fly the White Star Line flag for the day. Unfortunately all morning it poured and poured and it was a wet rag wrapped around the stay. So wet, it was hard to tell which flag was which. The weather made a superb turn around after midday and finally it flew, but I could not 'catch' it in any better position I'm afraid. I have not seen this mentioned in the news, or maybe I have just missed it?

I haven't seen this mentioned in the news nor in any ship-related boards or sites on the Internet. I guess that's why it was so hard for us to figure out the riddle. I'm still not sure why they flew the White Star pennant that day in Liverpool--what is the connection?

I assumed flying the 2 together was to signify the merger of White Star Line and Cunard, with the 2 Head Offices being in Liverpool at the time, upon which the completion of Queen Mary was dependent?

Why would they need permission. Wouldn't Cunard have the rights to White Star stuff, like the flag?

It was the Capt. who said that "permission" had been granted for the flying thereof. I am purely guessing here, but maybe it is more of a maritime compliance thing outside the control of Cunard alone? Can vessels only fly their own House Flag and nothing else?

Someone here must know the answer.

I thought it was really nice to see myself, but I am not sure many others really took a lot of note

Maybe he meant permission from Cunard (or even Carnival) headquaters.

Listening to a video clip I recorded whilst departing Greenock the Capt. says there "we have been given the honour of ..."

The flag flown is the original from Queen Elizabeth who of course was registered in Liverpool. This was done to mark 'Cunard's long association with the City of Liverpool'.
