The Ithaca, later the Dolphin IV (among other names) is now ( December 2007) sailing as the Imperial Majesty, doing 2 day Bahamas runs out of Fort Lauderdale. I haven't sailed on her ( yet ) but have loved this ship for years and hope to do so before she retires in 2010.

Sorry to disappoint you, but that ship was scrapped at Alang in 2003. Her tanks were completely rusted out and she never sailed again after her short-lived stint with Port Canaveral Cruise Line.

Where did you get this information? If you're not referring to the REGAL EMPRESS, it's obviously another vessel.

Well, I certainly THOGHT she was the Ithaca/Dolphin.

Maybe Imperial Majesty was the S.S. Sea Breeze.

Does that sound right ??

The ship used today by Imperial Majesty is the REGAL EMPRESS, ex CARIBE I/CARIBE/OLYMPIA. See here.

The SEABREEZE I sank in 2000 off Virginia.

Dave,

As Rich pointed out, the ship sailing for Imerial Majesty is the Regal Empress which entered service as Olympia back in 1952. Our guide to former ship names - link - is a good resource for tracking these older ships.

...and welcome aboard.

Dave, by all means do try to plan a trip on REGAL EMPRESS within the next year or so--her days are definitely numbered, too. Frankly, she has more original wood and artwork on board than did the DOLPHIN IV, which underwent many transformations over the years.

In fact, I encourage ANY and ALL ship lovers, who are planning to be in South Florida on vacation, or maybe pre/post cruise, to consider investing two nights and about $150 to experience this ship. The cruise product is not deluxe, but you will certainly get a taste of what the old ships were like. There just aren't many more opportunities left like this, certainly not in North America.

When she's gone, you'll regret NOT having sailed her, more than even if you have a lousy time during the cruise!

Well, I'm a codfish !!

I know that the Imperial Majesty is a ship that I scanned the picture of years ago -- but now I don't remember for sure which one it was.

When you get to be as old as I am, something happens to your memory.

But I forget what.

Anyway, the reason I bring this all up is that I am in the final stages of designing Forbidden Territory, an audience-participation re-creation of sailing on a historic ship in which participants will go to see as the characters in the story line rather than as their real selves.

I am thinking of beta testing the show aboard Imperial Majesty. ( I really want it to be on an historic ship. )

You can see my web page if you are interested in more information:

Imperial Majesty is the name of the cruise line which operates 2-night cruises from Port Everglades to Nassau. For the past 4 years they have operated the REGAL EMPRESS, but prior to that, their ship was the OCEAN BREEZE, which was scrapped at Chittagong in 2003. Perhaps that is the ship you remember.

My very first cruise was onboard ssDolphinIV in the 80's to Nassau in the Bahamas.
Sadly for a great Flipper lover, we never saw dolphins next to the ship and the decks were full of soot as the funnel was well forward of amidship.
She had a lovely sheer, often confused with sagging by some detractors.
The food was fabulous but I can't remember any shows and the passengers were elderly.
Now I realise that she was a much better looking ship when new.
She and her sister-ships always had a white hull duringher career but one of them went to the Portuguese and boasted a fabulous black hull for a while.
Built in the 50's, her external design was very advanced and similar to postwar Argentinian and Port line combi ships and even mvOslofjord!
It would be nice to have a book with all those wonderfully shaped ships!

Here is a view of her as the brand new ZION in 1956:

And there are many books out there with photos of the classic ships; best place to find them is on the Internet.
