For those who may not be familiar, here is the image of the two ships passing the WTC. It was taken in 1987 while the ship was named CANADA STAR, but used in the brochures for 1988 and 1989 when she had been renamed QUEEN OF BERMUDA:

I noticed that CANADA STAR has the forward structure addition while BERMUDA STAR has not received it yet. Also, what is with the hideous funnel top addition on the CANADA STAR?

When the VOLENDAM was sold to American Hawaii in 1985, they made of lot of changes, including increased accommodation forward. The thing on top of the funnel was apparently created to make her look more modern, but I was always annoyed by it. AHC operated the ship as LIBERTE in Tahiti during 1985 and 1986, before selling her to Bermuda Star Line.

When the ship later went to Commodore Cruise Line as ENCHANTED SEAS in 1990, they removed the top portion of the funnel and restored its appearance.

Yes, those were their original names when they came out in 1958 for Moore Mc-Cormack Lines, but they both had a long list of names during their lifetimes.

It is pretty interesting how these two always end up fleetmates with different lines.

That's a lovely photo in front of the WTC. Not quite what you are loking for BCL but there is a nice photo as CANADA STAR on Fakta om Fartyg, and look who is behind in the photo as Queen of Bermuda

I thought that addition forward was a showroom or other type of lounge space.

Bruce, actually you're right, that addition was not for cabins; I was wrong. When I sailed on CANADA STAR in 1987, it was a new casino area.

Thanks for the info,I appreciate it.They really messed with Canada stars lines when they added the new casino forward and that horrible addition to the dummy funnel. But in my opinion and it is a biased one as they are like my childhood homes, they have some of the most graceful lines of any ship.I didn't understand why someone did not try topreserve somehow the last two passenger ships built in the US.A maritme school or museum.Sad that they are paperweights now.

Wow, looks like she's on fire! Someone in the engine room needed to tend to things better. Also note the stern of ROTTERDAM ('59) in the background.

Monarch Sun (ex-Volendam, ex-Brasil) at San Juan in October 1977.

This ship would later be named Volendam (again), Island Sun, Liberté, etc.

Brian

P.S. At the time, her running mate was Monarch Star (ex-Veendam, ex-Brasil*, ex-Veendam, ex-Argentina)

* Name used during one-year charter in 1974-75.
