Hello everybody,

here are two pictures of "Prince" ex "Princesa Marissa" and "Serena" ex "Serenade" at Port Said, reportedly taken on Friday. Both are obviously enroute to the breakers:

Thanks for sharing these photos--I was booked to sail on SERENADE last week, back-to-back cruises, but 6 weeks ago Louis cancelled my cruises, of course, with full refund. Could not book on SAPPHIRE, the replacement vessel.

Rich,

Sorry you missed SERENADE. She was a lovely ship to sail in, although I wish I did more than just a two nighter to Egypt on her. Why could you not get on SAPPHIRE? She's high on my list to try along with a last fling in the lovely IVORY.

I was aboard MERMOZ twice during the '80s, but was looking forward to this trip. Louis had no single cabins to offer on the SAPPHIRE; I could have worked things out but I guess the disappointment just dampened the whole trip so I settled for the refund. As things worked out, I had to be Up North last week for a family emergency anyway, and being in Cyprus would have been difficult.

SAPPHIRE is indeed on my "bucket list", although I did sail on her as OCEAN PRINCESS in 1987.

I would have loved to have been on either one, I think the Mermoz used to be with Paquet/Ulysses Line??? Never got to visit her when I was a T/A in the mid-late 80's.

Would Princesa Marisa been hard to bring up to SOLAS...and she isnt really as old as many other ships..did Louis try and sell her first to anyone other than the breakers? She is no older than the original Princess and NCL ships.

Unlike the NCL ships of the same era, she truly is just a ferry with a huge car deck, no pool, and very limited facilities. She also has lots of woodwork, so I think the combination of bringing her to SOLAS standards and meeting the demands of a more savvy market have put an end to her.

And as her sister "Freewinds" seems to be having a major asbestos problem, I suppose that refurbishing her would be a very costly affair if done properly.

The current Freewinds 'asbestos' problems surely relate back to the haphazard handling of the vessel when the Church of Scientology first purchased her? I recall reading that they ripped everything apart and did not seal the blue asbestos but left it hanging behind loose panels. Then with several firms walking off the job back then, 'forced' their own members to finish off the work. Quite unprofessional and perhaps now paying the price.

The other 2 sisters have been scrapped already. But this is similar to Black Prince, she is of the same era, a converted ferry and has to go too.

Ernst has many clips of his trip last year aboard Serenade online.

Not really on topic but I read that a German company is about half way through building a small cruise vessel based on the old Chinese junks, I believe they need another $10 million in order to complete (now what soft touch is going to hand that over?) - but what interested me most is that her entire hull is built of wood ! I believe she will carry 100 pax so is she exempt from Solas as she carries so few pax ? Otherwise surely she would not be allowed to sail with pax after 2010?

She is only going to have 9 passenger cabins with a max 12 passengers. I don't believe SOLAS comes into it then?
