The s.s. Rotterdam was scheduled to be towed to her homeport in the first week of August. Early in the morning of Saturday 2 August, the decision was
made to depart from Wilhelmshaven. On Monday 4 August, we had chartered the former minesweeper AMS60 ms Bernisse to welcome the s.s. Rotterdam at sea and to accompany her to her new berth in the Maashaven.

This new album can be accessed (as usual) via my website.

Hello Willem,
thank you very much for this first series of pictures.
Also on behalf of my son Sven, I like to thank you too for making it possible to join you on the Bernisse to welcome the Rotterdam.
Henri.

On Monday 4 August, around 04.00 pm, the s.s. Rotterdam, towed by RT Magic and RT Spirit (assisted by SD Shark and SD Stingray) passed Hook of Holland on her way to her homeport Rotterdam.

Hi Willem,
You certainly have some incredible pictures of the SS Rotterdam. This is a ship that truely deserves the title of "Trend Setter" of the static attraction industry. I certainly hope that the QE2 becomes another example of the SS Rotterdam's success.

And to think that around 10 years ago, Premier Cruises wanted to convert the SS Rotterdam into the Big Red Boat IV. The idea of the SS Rotterdam becoming like another SS Norway didn't bold well for its future prospects. What I mean by the SS Norway is that Premier would have removed all of the ship's original furnishings, as well as removing the ship's unique features. Otherwise, the SS Rotterdam would not be with us today had Premier had their way.

Premier have that idea around '99 but after the plans came public, there was a world wide outcry. There passengers (some who came with the ship from HAL) and Liner buffs came in resistance. And started to call and write letters to Premiere. Premier overwhelmed by this international outcry, abandon the plan quickly. But shortley after that they went banckrupt and the Rotterdam was layd up in the Bahamas.

Greetings Ben.

I do remember that period very well. That was the time when an action was started to overload mr. Nierenberg with e-mails wondering if he lost his mind.

In that time I was still trying to convince my wife to take a cruise. It took four more years till I succeeded, so unfortunately I have never booked a cruise on the Rembrandt as a passenger.

We are now waiting for the opening to the public, as I would like to show my daughter and son-in-law the ship where I did get my first real job and of which a lot of talking has been the past seven/eight years.

Willem

Wondering if my 4 bellstations will still be there on maindeck-forward.

Hi Willem,
Will the new staff onboard the Rotterdam be wearing the uniform attire that was standard in 1959? That would certainly be quite interesting if they did that because it's practically going back in time to the era in which the ship began its maiden voyage.

I have no idea about that.
Once I heard that at least the guides for the museumpart will wear uniforms and I do hope they will use the original and not some fantasy ones.
