I've noticed that in recent pics of QE2 she tends to be making abit of smoke as she is in these as well. Another sign of her age and milage on her engines I guess. Having said that I do like it when a ship "smokes" abit...not very environmentally correct I realize but nevertheless fitting.

I have an old newpaper clipping of QE2 from the late 1970s or early 1980s (when there was talk of laying her up) and in the image she is making as much smoke as Lusitania did at full speed-and QE2 was docked!

I guess back then she was steam and making smoke was very easily achieved (although not desired). As a diesel ship, smoke can be an indicator of tired engines (injectors etc...). I have a whole load of ShipBuilder and Motorship magazines that my father use to bring home from work - he was a naval architect. One edition is mostly on the "New Cunarder - QE2", with all sorts of neat pic and drawings. I have another that discusses what eventually became her re-engineing into a motorship and I remember as a young person studing Marine Engineering I was devastated that would rip out her steam plant - I was a total steam freak...always thought steam ships were more "alive" than a diesel ship...so whats the point of this - nothing I guess...lol

What are the 6-reddish lights (I recall them being referred to as Christmas lights) on QE2's mast and next to QM2s. I forget what they are used for

I might be completely wrong (wouldnt be the first time) but if I remeber correctly I think they mean the port pilot is onboard. Or am I wrong? They do have something to do with in-port navigation.

dmwnc1, that's exactly what that means, constrained by her draft.

Rule 28
Vessels Constrained by their Draft
A vessel constrained by her draft may, in addition to the lights prescribed for power-driven vessels in Rule 23, exhibit where they can best be seen three all-round red lights in a vertical line, or a cylinder.

Lovely pictures.

I was getting excited about the thought of seeing them on 10 October - they're due in together that morning along with Ventura which I shall be on. But then I realised that by 10 October it will be fully dark at 6:30/7 o'clock, so I wouldn't get any pictures anyway.

Still, I might see them.

QE2 has always "smoked", even just after returning to service in 1987 following her re-engining. However, it was much worse in her steam days.

Very beautiful pictures. Reminder of the Atlantic period. When Southampton was the hub of trans Atlantic travel.

Greetings Ben.

I was looking at these pictures again and I just had to post on them one more time.

I really love these photos. First of all because I love these to ship like crazy and secondly because I love pictures of ships or the ocean early in the morning. Being by the ocean in the early morning just before or after sunrise is such a neat thing to me. When me and my family are in San Diego we always stay on Shelter island with a great view of San Diego bay. durring the early morning I like to wake up and go watch the ships sail by toward their pier. You can see my album with the Dawn Princess in San Diego here.

Once again thanks for the pictures Andrew!

Thank you for the great pictures, of course after seeing these and your other pictures I am now home sick, growing up in Fawley I had the pleasure of seeing the QE2 and many other liners sail out along Southampton water.

Oh well, cruising to Mexico in 3 weeks but I think a trip home may be due next year.

Your photos are always wonderful and these are certainly no exception.

I remember the first time I saw these two ships together in April 2004. It was a very exciting moment - the historical significance was obvious to me - but at that time I had never been on a Cunard ship! Four years on, they mean a lot more to me as I have enjoyed so many good times and met so many wonderful people on both ships.

Next time I see them together will be the last time for me. The first was QM2's first visit to New York, the next will be QE2's last. No ship will ever replace QE2 for me, but for me that moment will truly represent the "passing of the torch" from one ship to another... When QE2 goes, it will finally be QM2's time to really shine as the indisputable flagship of the Cunard fleet, the crown jewel of the Carnival empire and the greatest passenger ship in the world.

I was aboard QE2 when those photos were taken. It was lovely to see the QM2 from our ship!

QM2 looks good but QE2 sure does steal the show

Wow; that starboard-side closeup of QM2 is tantalizing. The closer you get, the more you can appreciate her. I can’t wait until my better half and I are aboard in January.

Cunard Fan.....I love early morning shots and visit to the shore for viewing ships too. The odd thing about California is that the ocean is always on the wrong side! At least for those of us from the East coast....

Its funny that you say that. I was just talking with a friend about that the other day. To me it always seems weird that on the east coast you dont get to watch the sun set over the ocean.
