QE was certainly one of the most perfectly proportioned liners.

As for the second Maury, I was never a fan of her exterior. I always wondered why Cunard did'nt design her as a mini QE w/a balanced profile and clean aft decks.

Great shots! I don't think we'll be so thrilled with the lines of the next QUEEN ELIZABETH!

Re: MAURETANIA, she was designed in the early '30s and was more QUEEN MARY than QUEEN ELIZABETH. A real working ship, not a glamourous speed queen, she had more clutter on her decks, but that was all part of her raison d'etre.

Rich,

I fiqured she was more of the workhorse of the three (QM & QE) ships. She resembled a very large combo liner w/QM inspired design touches.

Great Pictures!

I personally think both ships are beautiful. I have always loved the Mauretania's forward superstructure.

Queen Elizabeth was surely the best looking Cunarder of all time. Maury 2 was very popular with many who thought both Queens were too large. I've met several who would cross on no other. She was very like the Queens internally, but with a more cozy, intimate atmosphere. Great vintage photos. Thanks.

You're right, Lasuvidaboy. I don't understand why Cunard has so much difficulty matching that color today with QM2, QE2, and QV.

The color on QE2 and QV seems correct to me. Just not QM2. Are they ever going to fix that?

Her funnel color was corrected several months ago. There are a few pics of her at Luis Miguel Correia's excellent site at:

www.lmcshipsandthesea.blogspot.com/search?q=qm2

Scroll down to the images of QM2 arriving at Lisbon in June, 2008 to see the corrected color of the funnel. Scroll down even farther to compare the new color to the dark crimson red she had since new.

Great photos!! The colour of the funnels really do stand out. I as well liked the Maury II, she was from the exterior at like a mini QE I (only my opinion of course).

From AL the past 1930 Cunard I think the Queen Elizabeth (1) is my favorite. Mauritenia I think the funnels where slightly out of balance fore here to have a balanced exterior. Always believed that she was intended as 3 funnel liner just as Mary.

Greetings Ben.

I was lucky enough (as a boy) to see both Queens and Mauretania in Southampton . There are no words to describe the magic and sense of power and purpose that they had - no current cruise ship (or liner) comes close to having anything near the 'presence' that these ships possessed. Even in Long Beach if I screw my eyes up real tight and forget the surroundings I can still get feel that same sensation in the pit of my stomach

Oh nostalgia

I see you have a shot of KUNGSHOLM '66 departing while QM awaits her turn....or she may have just docked by the look of the tugs.

If deck clutter is winches, ventilators and derricks, it may not look so good from afar, but once onboard it and strolling the decks, it creates visual interest, and pleasing to look at in the machine aesthetic I enjoyed it on the Queen Mary 1.

I would rather look at the machinery than the God-awful foam plastic palazzos done in the wrong architectural order in colors unknown to nature that disgrace the Queen Victoria, NCL Dawn and Royal Carribean ships.

Wow! That's a great find. Makes me wish my dad had stopped being a typical boozy soldier back in the early 60s and taken photos!

I was talking to someone who used to work for the port way back and he told me QM had a terrific send off but QE was slipped out quietly at 8am. He said he only found out when he was on his way to work and saw her leaving. Is that right?

That's right, Patsy. QUEEN ELIZABETH quietly left Southampton for Port Everglades on 28 November 1968. The Queen Mother had previously come down to say farewell to "her " ship, but on departure day, besides the Albion Band of Southampton, very few people saw her off.
