Wouldn't be great if Cunard were to build a identical twin sister to the QE2? The ship could be named RMS Queen Diana, in honor of her royal highness, Princess Diana. The appearance of the ship would look exactly as it was in 1969. However, the vessel's interior layout would be similar to the SS France, with over $150 Million worth of British works of art that was a reflection of the British Empire under the reign of Queen Victoria. The ship's superstructure would be pure steel and not aluminum.

The cabin spaces and amendities could be on the level of the QM2, which would be all First Class, with very large and spacious cabins and ultra deluxe cabins that rival Dubai's. Although , the decour would have the 1960's feel it while the standards would exceed Crystal Cruises own.

The Queen Diana would certainly succeed the QE2 if Cunard were to build her. Imagine the QD1 sailing the seven seas, as her sister?

Now there's a ship that would never be able to pay for herself

That's a promotion! You can't call Princess Diana (a non-Queen) a 'Queen'. It don't work like that.

Anyway, apart from a few ship nuts who wants to cruise on a new ship with many small cabins, no proper theatre, no observation lounge and very few balconies?

Well if it was an exact copy of QE2 (circa 1969) the Look-out would be there but there would'nt be any balconies.

Heck, I'd be happy if they just stuck a large funnel on the new QE. How about an exact copy of QE2s and use the same whistle as well!

Why not just they same one? After Dubai cuts it off.

You should read my comments very carefully. I said that the interior layout of the ship would be similar to the SS France/SS Norway in design. Second, the cabins would be as large as the most specious cabins onboard the Queen Mary 2. The SS France had one of the most beautiful interior layouts, which included a theatre. And the ship would have around 450 luxury cabins that would rival the Queen Mary 2. It would be an all First Class Luxury vessel, with the best cabins and amendities around. And the RMS Queen Diana would certainly make headlines, as the QE2 has done.

A ship doesn't need balconies to do well. The main problem that some has forgotten is that large waves can smash into them. I can't see what the big deal about them are. To me, the balconies are nothing more than apartment space to look out of. Does the SS Rotterdam V need balconies to survive?

Well put together video - though presumably Ian Maclean is a Scot, introducing the old line about QE2 not being named after the Queen as she is not QE II in Scotland One thing I did notice for the first time is that the Queen is given a card before the launch, reads what's on it and then names the ship Queen Elizabeht the Second - go figure

Chris I think many people would take you to task in calling QE2 'the most magnificent Ocean Liner of all time' - that really is pushing the hype to the limit!!

So I believe - BUT, the urban myth goes that HM declined the card and said something like 'I won't need that'. The card is supposed to still be in existence ... as is an onboard invitation dated 20 Sept 67 from another Cunard ship (can't remember which one) to a celebration drinks reception to mark the launch of the new Cunard Liner Queen Elizabeth II

Did'nt Cunard intend to have QE in service w/Q4?

I remember reading that Cunard had the intention of keeping QE in service until the mid-1970s alongside the new flagship.

Of course financial realities prevented this but if it did happen, what would have been the name of Q4? QM2?

My understanding is that the name was only chosen after it was decided that QE would be withdrawn before Q4 was in service. The short list prepared by Cunard supposedly included QE, Princess Anne and Princess Margaret!!!

My clear recall from that time is that the Queen named the ship after herself and Cunard were extremely happy about it!!!

I've heard that. I understand why the ship was'nt called QEII but there should be a ship named after this great lady. She has named so many ships over the years and deserves it!

Hi Ken - we're all entitled to our opinions - but if you can give me another liner that has travelled 6 million miles, carried 2.5 million passengers and survived uncertainty, war service, economic downtime, the Jet, and still came out the other end beloved world wide - and I'd be happy to debate it.

I've had a fondness for QE2 for decades - as far as my comments are concerned - it's not at all hype.

Cheers.

Hi Chris ...

I only said that many people would take you to task - but of course you are entitled to your opinion.

No one can question that QE2 has been one of the greatest workhorses, but you use the superlative 'most magnificent of all time' which for me has a little more to do with quality than quantities.

I and many others have boarded QE2 with great expectations but come away greatly disappointed - that's the hype I was referring to. But I perfectly understand that many have a fondness for what they find.

Ken

Hello...

To those who love her, QE2 has a unique and special 'spirit' - those who return time and time again feel as if they have somehow been reunited with an old friend. Bill Miller said it well in the video on my site that QE2 will be remembered as beloved.

I only referred to her superlatives as evidence that perhaps it's the thousands of repeat (satisfied, happy guests) that helps place her among the most magnificent Ocean Liners ever. 39+ years of service isn't achieved through mediocrity.

Still, that's the great thing about us humans - we're all different and like different things - it'd be pretty boring (and crowded aboard) if we all liked the same thing.

Chris.

If the design team that had created the interiors of the public areas and cabin space onboard the SS France had done the same interior designs for the QE2, it would have been a awesome vessel that would have been on equal footing.

It would be nice to see a twin sister of the QE2 be constructed in the manner that I had described. However, I thought that the name would be Queen Diana. But I've decided that the RMS Princess Diana would be more appropiate.

QE2 is certainly a special ship BUT there are also other ships with a loyal following (maybe with an even a higher percentage of returning passengers) and even these days where a lot of ships have been lost 'just' because of changes in regulations the 39 years of service are exceeded by other vessels which are still in service. A lot of factors contribute to whether a ship is successful or whether it can stay in service for a long time. However, in the case of QE2 I would be very careful on placing her amongst the "most magnificent Ocean Liners ever" since there is actually HARDLY any other vessel that had so much luck as she had. If it were not for her name and some coincidences she probably would not be around anymore. QE2 is of course a special ship - there is hardly any other passenger ship beside Titanic which is as well know as she is. There is also nothing wrong with adoring her - BUT one should keep it in context.

The interior designers of the France, this is the stupids remark YOU ever made here on CT. France interiors where not the most handsome afloat. In that the QE2 original interiors where by far more superior. This statement proof you not have a clue where you talking about. and why the sudden fetish of naming a vessel Queen Diana or more stupid Princess Diana. Once again proof you don't know nothing about Cunard history.......!
Stop with making stupid remarks. It begins to irritate.

Why you never comment in other non ship preservation topics. There is so much other interesting going on this moment. Look here the Celebrity Solstice interior treat. very interesting. Or look at these very rare and interesting color interior pictures of the Statendam of 1929.
