This may well be the last view I get of her, taken from on board SS TOPAZ -- as there is no access to BL's port side anymore. Apparently, a large tanker is in the way. I suspect the rest of her will be gone by February, at the latest.

Unfortunately I think the recession will help terminate the operational lives of many of the worlds remaining 'classic ships' in the next year or two.

Thats got to be some kind of record? From the first pictures we saw of her firmly aground at Alang on August 15, 2006 to her final dismantling sometime in January 2009. Wow.

Alang became what they are thanks to Canberra, another very well built ship that broke its shipbreakers!
What would be nice is to know excatly where the stell will be used.
ssNorway was first grade and will be recycled for Dubai hungry scryscraper..or may be Palm Jumeira hotles???
It would be nice to know...
Normandie's scrap helped develop many US towns after WW2.

Alang was huge long before CANBERRA went to Pakistan in 1997. Pakistan has foundered because of terrorism and corruption, which makes Alang look like tea at the CP hotel in Victoria. If the shipbreakers there do not comply with the local gang lords, they are shot or have their throats cut. Also, with few exceptions, Pakistan and Bangladesh are not keen on passenger ships as they do not have the local marketplace for all the fittings and furniture.

I hate to say this, but in the photo I can't tell what is left of the NORWAY. It's not clear enough for me. Could someone please circle what's left of the Roman Spa so I can see?? Thank you.

Deborah,

You CANNOT see the Roman Spa in the above photo since it was located exactely between the mid distance between the two stabilizers fins and terminating just above the fore stab fins.

In short, either this part is on the beach and you can't see it since hidden by the big metal thing on the foreground (at the right of the photo, on the beach), either it already has been scrapped and no longer exists.
The only stab fin you can see on the photo is the aft starboard one.
In any cases, you can't see it on this above photo.

Thank you very much Vaccaro, I appreciate your keen eyes on this subject. I kept trying and realized I really wasn't seeing a thing.

Peter,
Pakistan may well still have bits from Michelangelo and Canberra, buttravelling there with a UK/US passport wouldn't be wise now!
I heard on another topic that it was a pity remains from the hulls weren't used for shiplovers.
After Seawise University sank in Hong Kong, pens were made from her hull and her wreck starred in a James bond.
ssNorway desserves some immortality in death too and many bits of liners remains to be seen around the world.
Does someone knows where excatly the steel from Alang goes?
Dubai? Taiwan?

The Man with the Golden Gun was the Bond movie that had the wreck of the Queen Elizabeth in it.

That was a great Bond film w/spectacular scenery.

The sets built to resemble the interiors of the capsized ship were quite good. Don't forget those amazing images of Seawise University burning in the photo section here.

The James Bond movie was "You Only Live Twice," not "The Man With The Golden Gun." I am fairly sure I'm correct on this.

I stand corrected. "The Man With The Golden Gun" was one of two Bond films I disliked. The other was the re-make of "Thunderball" with Klaus Maria Brandauer. The name of which escapes me.

Actually both were filmed in Hong Kong. But only the The Man with the Golden Gun featured the QE in it. I think the QE was still sailing when You Only Live Twice was made.

"You only Live Twice" with Sean Connery was released in 1967. The Bond Movie which featured the QE wreck in Hong Kong was definitely "The Man with the Golden Gun" with Roger Moore as JB and Christopher Lee as the title character. It was released in 1974.
