quote:Originally posted by Midshipcentury:Nothing happened for three months after her beaching, then she was finally stripped of nearly everything while being dragged closer. Her dented bow is now gone and cutting has begun in earnest. So sad to see this old girl get torn apart. She's like the QUEEN MARY, albeit in miniature. The fittings, now apparently sold off or broken down into recyclable components, were so typically 1930s through late 1950s British with the same joinery techniques, acid etched glass, nickel, etc. Linoleum and wood paneling revealed after years under the Farcus formica and wall "carpeting". RIP EMPRESS.
Such a sad fate, indeed. To think that the ship would still be sailing with the Peaceboat Organization, were it not for the skyhigh oil prices that ended her charter with them last year. In addition, the skyhigh scrapmental prices doomed her because those inflated prices was close to her resale value to other shipping companies. Thus, Glasgow lost the opportunity to get the vessel on time.

i seriously doubt that glasgow would have wanted the SS Topaz, or if anyone would ever want to go there to visit it, i presume you have never been there?
You may a low opinion of Glasgow but I was there when it was the year it was the ' City of Culture ' and I really enjoyed my visit so do not think all UK residents think the same as you !
I do not know where you got these numbers from but it does not say over what period they are based.
This type of posting only puts tourists off visiting the UK which does not help those invoved in the tourist industry which includes cruising !

I live 30 miles from London and it is far cheaper to stay in Luton than book in to a hotel in London.
Regarding Glasgow they have an excellent transport museum with full size steam railway engines and tram cars on display.
Upstairs there is an excellent model ship collection.
I do not know if you have visited Glasgow but if you did you might not publish such deogratory remarks about the city.
I have visited Weston Super Mare which I found to have a very run down appearence, very high car parking charges and stayed at hotel which could do with a update, the bathroom needed a good clean, and the manager was not prepared to serve a meal after 8.00pm in the evening.
They were AA listed but not any longer !
To my mind it is a place I would not visit again !
It is a treasure trove of architecture by Charles Rennie McKintosh. There is a bit of everything.
The Gorbels which was notorious for the razor gangs had huge slum clearance. The hi-rises co-exist with what was new at the time row houses with a common back yard.
The West end of the city was built upon industrial wealth with beautiful 19th century row homes, manor houses, parks and museums.
Merchant City had historic buildings gutted on the inside yet the facades and lobbiies if warranted preserved.
I did see the Maritime Museum
The city is not the Newark/Cleveland/Detroit of Scotland anymore.
now, not that i want to stop this... THRILLING debate, this is wandering off topic

I have yet to write or publish anything about my trip to Alang to see her in August. It was a disaster as far as TOPAZ was concerned but I did see her on the beach with that crumpled bow next to BLUE LADY for a few fleeting moments and got some rather amazing shots from the FINNJET.

I didn't chase her much after that since I really managed to capture everything but the engine room.
