I read on another site that the gorgeous ss Oceanic has been sold to the Peaceboat organization. She is apparently being prepared for the transfer in Barcelona and will be delivered to her new owners in April. More info at: www.lmcshipsandthesea.blogspot.com

If this is indeed true, this is good news! OCEANIC is a much better ship than the CLIPPER PACIFIC, even better than the TOPAZ!

Presumably this should mean she should be coming to New York once a year.

Now that will be a real treat!

Great news indeed. I believe she has been sold to a Japanese business that will charter her to Peaceboat, up till now Peaceboat have never owned a ship but chartered them.

Bang goes my plan to sail on her this summer
Good news though for the ship

I wonder whether Pullmantur will reshuffle some of the planned deployments of its other ships to continue with OCEANIC's programme from Valencia. Will PACIFIC DREAM go to Mexico after all and will OCEAN DREAM remain in the Caribbean?

The Japanese Peace Boat organization have always chartered their ships so I wonder if there is a translation problem and she is chartered and not sold !

Steeplechase, it's the same OCEANIC, of 1965, originally with Home Lines, then Premier's Big Red Boat, then Pullmantur.

Incidentally, I believe this would be the first time the ship would ever leave Atlantic and Mediterranean waters.

This is, indeed, an interesting turn of events. Peace Boat must be increasing pax numbers as her capacity in higher than any ships they've used recently. She's also a bit fuel hungry so I guess they'll run her at reduced speeds. As Oceanic for Home Lines she would often return to NYC running a bit late and could easily race at 26-27 knots to arrive on time. At those speeds she could really pitch heavily if the seas were not smooth. I like the choice for Peace Boat and wish her well. Is this a one-year deal or is she 2010 SOLAS compliant?

According to the captain on the 2006 OLS Group Cruise, the s.s. Oceanic is 2010 SOLAS compliant.

Then why am I thinking she was scrapped a couple of years ago? ANd does Peace boat accept paying passengers? I am not sure I know what they are about.

Steeplechase.....this is most definitely the Oceanic your grandmother sailed on from NYC to Nassau in the '70's.

There were other lines that used Oceanic in the names of some vessels. One I can think of was the SS Independence which sailed for a time as the Oceanic Independence. I think there were others.

Yes, this is true. OCEANIC was sold to Peaceboat last week. She is scheduled to leave Barcelona on Sunday 15 March, destination Yokohama.

I TOTALLY agree with you and will definitely makethe effort for this to actually go and see her arrive. (not many left that I would do that for).

Somehow I think this summer's visit might still be Clipper Pacific; however, I certainly hope this changes.

The ss Independence was renamed 'Oceanic' prior to leaving San Francisco apparently for scrapping (she is still in limbo at this point). Her twin sister the Constitution was also renamed Oceanic for her final voyage.

Does anyone know if there is any of the old Home Lines' decor left? For the most part I never liked her decor much, but many did. I always thought she was too metallic and lacked warmth. Her decor was not entirely different from that on Michelangelo and Raffaello, but theirs seemed warmer. Any facts or thoughts?

Some of her original decor remains. The two things that come immediately to mind are her dining room chandelier and the metallic sculptures in her stairwells.

Much of her newer and more colorful decoration was done during her Premier days. With regard to her being "cold", I've heard others mention this. It think it's mainly due to the Italian love of formica in the 60s. It was never much of an issue to me though. I think that the very length of her service career shows how highly regarded she was. I also think that reputation is the reason her name was never changed. This may soon change, however.

OCEANIC still has the original art in her stair towers, those silvery-grey plaques or reliefs, representing historical figures and world landmarks.
These are the most noticeable remnants of Home Lines--most of the ship is pretty much as it was during Premier's stewardship.

Thanks for sharing, Deb. That's pretty much exactly as OCEANIC looks today--all of those interiors date from Premier days. She looked much different when she sailed with Home Lines--more elegant rooms, crystal chandeliers, velour-covered chairs, very Italian.

My thoughts are ambiguous

I am glad that "Oceanic" will sail some more time, some yearq I guess.
On the other hand, I think she found her place in Spain, where she did oneweek cruises, as she always has done (now 3/4 days cruises).
The "Peace Boat" seems to me a rather vague association, and now real round the world voyages - i am curious, but also sure she will do it allright, Oceanic is a happy ship with a pleasant atmosphere.

As for decoration, in public rooms : the metal and ceramic decoration in the stair towers, which are really nice.

I also think the accomodation is italian 1960s, at least the cabin I used didn't seem not to have changed much, the aircon was Italian, and the furniture seemed italian 60s formica.

Oceanic should serve Peaceboat well..as she is Ideally suited for Round the World Cruising and with the higher passenger capacity her fuel issues should not affect her as previously with the Topaz as she is much more Fuel Efficent despite having Steam Turbines..Thats one reason why she's outlasted many of her predecessors. Oceanic will sail to ports she has never seen before and what a sight she will be in such places as Vancouver,San Fransisco,LA and all across the Pacific as I dont believe she has ever sailed in Pacific Waters before.
