It's been almost four months since my last update to MidShipCentury.com for a variety of reasons but now that I finally have access again, added a sad but breathtaking view of TOPAZ taken in late March, along with a few new items:

Peter, looking forward to the DISCOVERY in a week

Hmmm. I just double checked and it shows up fine on my browser. Apologies in the interim. I'll keep jiggering with it.

I had no problem viewing it. Wow that is an amazing and sad shot. The CARNIVALE was actually the ship that got me interested in cruises and ships. My parents sailed on her (their first cruise) in 1976. The rest is history.

Hmmm, I cannot view the photo either through Internet Explorer or through FireFox. Any chance of posting the image right to this thread? Thanks!

It definitely works on Safari. Sorry about that, you guys. I do not know why it is being so difficult to view. I had this problem with a couple of the BLUE LADY updates last year. Unfortunately, my agreement with my agent/photographer in India will not allow me to post anywhere other than MidShipCentury and, on occasion, MaritimeMatters.

I use Safari, so I guess that is why it's working. Usually it's the other way around!

Just downloaded Safari in an attempt to view the picture, but still no dice. Maybe Peter and Ernie are using an older version of Safari?

I have version 3.2.1. I'll mess with it more tomorrow morning. I did notice I needed to refresh the page a couple times to get the image to show. Again, my apologies to those with much better computer skills and knowledge than me.

For those of you who are using Safari but not seeing the photo, are you using OS X or Windows?

Peter,

on my computer, IrfanView says that despite the extention the file is a PSD file, not a JPG. With 1,41 MB, the file is also extremly large for a JPG of 600x420 dots.

My kind auggestion would be to re-process the image as a JPG an re-upload it.

Best,

Raoul

Strangely, it was a photoshop file converted to a low res jpg but somehow the process must not have completed. In any case, Pam sent me a proper jpg, which I uploaded. Many thanks to Pam for her help here. In any case, it is a sad and startling image but also quite fascinating.

I sailed in TOPAZ as CARNIVALE way back in 1982 when she still had most of her original EMPRESS OF BRITAIN woodwork and furniture. Then again in 1998, I sailed in her as OLYMPIC for three very short nights. Loved my full day farewell visit to her in Vancouver a few years ago.

I hope what I have been able to rescue is delivered safely and soon.

Best,

Peter

Exact same thing for me, except we went in 1977. I'll always love that ship.

The picture doesn't bother me like I thought it would. She looks, somehow, proud. Maybe it's just the angle, but to me she's had a proud career, and is standing up straight to face the inevitable with dignity.

She was my second cruise as Queen Anna Maria as a young child.

I saw her in NYC 2004 & 5 and was in great shape.
I hope the brass doors to Hemingway's and what was the casino are saved as well as the Windjammer Marquetry.

Very sad! She will be gone very soon. There are back to the first class suites with their very beautiful wood. I sailed her several times in the early 70's from NYC and from Baltimore. She was a favorite of mine.
