AS mentioned in another thread, last year NYK spent a lot of money refurbishing HIKAWA MARU.
She was throughly painted inside and out, and fitted with new carpeting and floors throughout, as well as decking that looks like new. The ship is probably now better presented than she was in her seagoing days! More parts of the ship are open to the public than previously. HIKAWA MARU has been in her present location since 1960 or 1961, and is set to remain there for quite a few decades to come.

Here are recent interior shots, showing 1st class dining room, library, 1st class lounge, 1st class smokeroom, a sample 1st class 2 berth cabin, Master's dayroom, Master's bedroom, bridge, wheelhouse, and promenade deck.

Truly lovely - especially the view of Mona Lisa from the bridge. It's nice to see a number of others also visiting. I often find it such a shame to visit ships to find I am one a handful aboard and sometimes even alone. Thanks for those.

Pam

Magnificent! I visited her in 1995 and she was not in such great shape. So nice to see her again through your photos. Great that the dining room no longer has the stack chairs like those on QUEEN MARY. NYK really did a beautiful job -- I hope she succeeds. Thanks for sharing the images.

Peter

A huge improvement! I remember seeing images of her interiors in the past and she was dark, dingy and totally uninviting. The fresh floor coverings, paint and bright interior lighting makes a big difference. W/those changes I could see many more people visiting this charming liner.

Lovely interior shots there. Thank you. She looks great. So does Mona Lisa!

One day, I would like to take a repositioning cruise from Japan to Vancouver. If I find myself in this area, this ship will be on my sightseeing list!

Graham.
