She must be languishing somewhere off Alang as it's almost a month since she passed through Suez & the Red Sea. Unless she has been diverted anywhere. Everything seems very quiet.

She seems to have "disappeared" in the same manner that OCEANIC ex.INDEPENDENCE did!

I'd like to know what happened to her as well, even on Vessltracker.com..it says she's out of range for tracking or something like that.

Both ships had a large amount of asbestos and other toxic substances on board so it was too be expected they might disappear.

I often wonder how much of the furniture and fittings, which have been removed from the ships at Alang, are de- contaminated !

In the UK you need a licence to handle these type of fixtures and fittings as has happened with the US warships which came here for breaking..

Like many of you, I've been watching the slow journey of the RE. Searching through the various websites I tried to come up with a timeline since her departure from the Bahamas.
If anyone could fill in the missing spots or has anything else to add I'd appreciate it.

April 2 - Sails from Freeport, Bahamas
Re-registered in St. Kitts

April 6 - Arrives at Port of Spain, Trinidad

April 16 - Departs Trinidad for final transatlantic voyage

April 26 - Arrive at Las Palmas 8 AM
Depart Las Palmas 11 PM for Gibraltar

April 29 - Arrives Gibraltar

April 30th - Leaves Gibraltar at 12 PM - destined for Port Said. 13.9 kts

May 9 - During her transit she reduces speed
- Flies the "Restricted Maneuverability" flag (poss mech problems?)
- Enters Greek anchorage near Kalamata

May 11 - Departed Greek Anchorage near Kalamata, Greece at 6:15 PM traveling at 12.6 kts.

May 14 - Arrived at Port Said around 5 AM

May 15 - Transited Suez Canal in the 1st southbound convoy at 2:06 AM and exited canal at 3:10 PM.

May 19 - Passed Port Sudan in the Red Sea

Isn't Sudan close to Pirates stronghold?
She might have been smuggled and now sails as a Pirates Flagship.
I find it strange these Pirates attacks in such high seas with small boats..surely they need a mothership to launch their attack?

Hello everybody,

thanks to a friend with an AISLive account, I can report that "Regal Empress" was last seen sending from an anchorage at Mumbai, India, two days ago (June 18th).

According to my correspondent at Exim-India, she is expected at Alang late next week to be in the right high tide conditions. Or early in July ...

She has been inspected by the GMB inspectors.

According to my friend there, not many breakers are showing an interest in RE because of her riveted hull and chopped up layout. Apparently there are loads of ro/ros and other ships at Alang that are far less labor intensive. He believes it will be a while before she is actually beached but anything could happen...

Hello,

Thanks Peter for the information. My correspondent working for Exim-India tell me the same. Two plots (read breakers) -at least- and not the best are interested, but not at the price asked for. So

It could take a while (not before the beginning of July). Short or not ... it's market ! A RoRo, LPG , tanker or containers are easier to recycle (with new GMB policies), with less problem. Just a few plots are now "equipped *" to handle hazardous materials.

*: not perfectly, in the Indian way.

Regal Emprees is announced at Alang soon. The last information was for the 7 of July for arrival close to the beach. But there is a mistype, she is expected for the 17th.

The Agent is MCC and no plot has been announced yet. Everything could change quickly at Alang, but the end is near. She was not reported to be beached yesterday, according to Exim-India. With his draught of 28 ft, she could be beached at any moment between Saturday and next Saturday. Monday is the best ...

By the way, her name has changed: From "Regal Empress", she is now called (if there is no other typo) "Regal Tmpress".

So Regal Empress (now Regal Tmpress) is now officially arrived at at Alang the 19th of July and will be beached the next few days (probably today).

She has no plot assigned, the plot N° will be named when the beaching process is finished.

Yes, today appears to be the day. No firm plot yet, but the guess from my source is that she will end up in an area that is difficult to photograph due to a number of other ships in the vicinity and her deep draft. In any case, the old girl will finally be put to rest after an amazing and successful career. All those people who sneered at her in recent years from their big box boats in Florida and the Bahamas will never understand.

I know its just a ship but for people who love ships as we do it is sad. I sailed the Empress back in 1993 and 1996 plus my mom and grandparents sailed her back in the late 60s early 70s as the Olympia to Bermuda from NYC. When I sailed on her there was no doubt she was old but I thought charming. I will always remember the library with the original Greek Line insignia etched into the wood. Regal Cruises reserected the insignia and made it their own. It also amazes me that the Regal Empress also docked in port with so many of the great liners. I have photos of her in books by Bill Miller and the likes that show her back in the 50's docked next to the legendary QE, Queen Mary, United States. It is amazing to think that she has made it all these years. One thing to be happy about was that she had a long career and was a very popular as a ship. She was especially popular as Commodore's Caribe 1 and she gained a big reputation here in the NYC area as the Regal Empress......afordable fun cruises and her 1 and 2 night party cruises were always in demand. I have great memories of her....RIP!

And that's sad, because she far outclassed them in style and grace that they would ever be.

Olympia-Regal Empress has an unquantifiable feel that few classic liners can exude much less any modern ship.

I so much wanted to see this ship saved for future generations. Even in Glasgow. But now a twist of fate took my favorite ship away.

This has let a huge hole in my heart. I wanted to see Great Britain have this ship. And now, my resolve has been unwinded. I feel less of a motivation to advocate on the rescue some of these all time greats.

What am I to do now that my favorite ships are now gone?
