Hmmmmmm, pinch of salt ?

My understanding was that the contract with Cunard specifically forbids any return to cruise or liner service with paying pax.

Of course perhaps it is one of the UAE Princes / Sheiks whatever who intend to use it as a yacht to visit M&S in Soton and buy the Isle of Wight before a quick trip to NY and Bloomingdales and buy Manhatten ? He'll then use QE2 to tow them back to the new World Island resort ?

Yes a sketchy little story to say the least.
On SSMaritime site ( maybe not known for its accuracy ) there is another rumour that QE2 is about to embark on some sort of 18 month contract

I can confirm that it is TRUE! The SS United States will be renovated by the end of the year and will tow the QE2 across the pond.

I was just playing along.

Though it says she will be a "worthy successor," which is perhaps not quite true. On the other hand as I am already planning a voyage in her (unless it is exorbitantly expensive) so she cannot be so bad.

(For those wondering, the one I am wanting to do is the tandem maiden transatlantic with QUEEN VICTORIA, Jan 2011. I will conveniently be on board QM2 when this is opened for booking ... a week from today actually.)

If anything, it keeps QE2 in the public's mind, which is a positive. If she was forgotten, she would surely be less of an asset than if she maintains her reputation.

I'm told that one reliable thing is to ask whether there are any "business development" grants available to pay for "feasibility studies" into projects like this. Then, just follow the money. Once you've milked the grant for all it's worth, you will - naturally - discover that it's not feasible after all.
