Just curious how many people have an ocean liner/cruise ship lifejacket as part of their collection?

I have two.

No lifejackets in my collection, but a related story: on my cruise aboard BAHAMAS CELEBRATION a few months ago, I noticed there are no lifejackets in any of the cabins. These are kept in lockers on deck near the lifeboats.

Lifeboat drill crowds every passenger on all decks into the central atrium lobby on their deck--it's very hot and crowded, and there would not be room if people were wearing their lifejackets. This is not an exaggeration!

I've got a kapok one from the USNS GENERAL NELSON M. WALKER (one of the last P2s that I visited during her tow from the reserve fleet to the breakers) and nine or so from ANASTASIS (ex VICTORIA) that I purchased from the ship in Alang. I still have a few for sale on www.midshipcentury.com.

As for life rings, I have some interesting ones: SS ORONSAY (given to me by Captain Lefevre on her final sailing from San Francisco), CANBERRA (also given to me in San Francisco on her final visit), ALBATROS (given to me by her staff captain on her final visit to Los Angeles), BRITANIS (rescued from the ship in Tampa), LEONID SOBINOV (given to me by chief engineer in Iliychevsk, Ukraine), REGENT STAR (purchased from the traders at Alang) and TOPAZ (a gift from my friend at Alang -- due soon).

Rich,
This is the way it will work on OASIS OF THE SEAS as well. In fact the entire lifeboat drill is being redesigned. With OASIS, it seems RCI is taking a fresh approach to everything and they probably need to. This actually makes sense to me, as not everyone would have the ability to return to their cabin and obtain a lifejacket in a major emergency. Currently, on most ships only a limited supply of lifejackets are kept by the stations.

In other OASIS news, it appears the ship will come in at 225,000 grt and 17,100 dwt.

Yes, life boat drills and the evacuation of large ships will be different than it used to be. However, in the case of BAHAMAS CELEBRATION it's probably just the fact that she is a former ferry. On ferries it's common not to have the life jackets in the cabins and it seems as if they just stayed with that. (also, there is usually no drill required on the short one night voyages like she used to do)

Very interesting, I wish I had gotten one from the NORWAY, but I have a feeling the only site that has them; has them over priced. I got to see what you had Peter and the lifejacket from the ship is just beautiful.
Now as the lifeboat drills, I think if they're being changed it will be due to complacency now...a little complacent for me.

I have a crew work vest from the DELTA QUEEN, but my pride is a canvas and balsa wood lifejacket stamped, Str. GORDON C. GREENE, Str. AVALON, and Str. BELLE OF LOUISVILLE. That puts it back to the late forties.

The GORDON C. GREENE was the tourist boat that made the Cincinnati based Greene Line Steamers the money to purchase the DELTA QUEEN. After the GORDON ceased operating her life vests and other equipment, including her boilers, were transfered to the tramp excursion steamer AVALON. The GORDON's main steam valve still sees service today on the BELLE OF LOUISVILLE (see www.belleoflouisville.org) which the AVALON was renamed in 1963.

Finally added a few delinquent items, including the lifejackets and even a lovely, back-breaking brass bell from the PRINCESSE ASTRID and a solid brass w/t door control valve from the ZION/DOLPHIN:

Also, discovered I have a life ring from the UNIVERSE EXPLORER (not for sale) in addition to the others previously mentioned.

Peter, reorganizing and finding things in prep. for the new container due shortly...
