Allthough not officially announced by the owners, but the official opening date of the s.s. Rotterdam is delayed again.

The ship will now be open to the public on 5 September.

According to the tv station tv Rijnmond they want to test everything extensive before they open for the public. They want to make sure all works well before the ship opens.

I know from an inside source that they still need to put in a lot of the carpets.

People from the area Katendrecht where the ship is located and people from Vereniging de Lijn and Stichting Behoud ss Rotterdam will have the possibility to visit the ship on July 25 and 26.

We asked if our marriage on board will be at risk but all planned mariages before September 5 will happen.

What are you going to to now Aad? this is not good for you.

So the restaurant *may* open at the end of September and the hotel aspect 1 Nov? They have now missed the more lucrative summer season. Will they make it through to next year even if they do open in Nov. I wonder...

We've spoken to On board on shore and they told us not to worry. We will have dinner in an alternative location on the ship. But no wedding night on board.

The ship claims they will open for tours during he Harbour days on September 5.

The weekend for members of Support Steamship de Rotterdam and members of the Lijn next week is canceled.

You would have thought that Ben would have some news about these delays as he is often talking about the ship.

Why do you have to be so rude as refering to people as 'OLD MAN ' !

I asked a polite question but as usual you are just rude to posters on this website.

You should apologise !

According to the manager of De Rotterdam BV, only 1/4 part of the ship is restored. They hope to be ready for the public on 5 September.

Personnaly I don't believe their stories anymore.
After one year at Katendrecht, only 1/4 part finished
How on earth can they manage to finish the remaining 3/4 in two months time ? ? ?

Perhaps there is more financial problems for this project than has been disclosed.

As there is now reported to be only a quarter of the ship ready to open to the public I would think it could be at least another 18 months before everything is finished.

With financial restraints it could be longer !

I had hoped to visit her before I board Prinsendam in Amsterdam 7 August

I will have to settle for the Madurodam. Unless the scale Rotterdam is there no more?

Mike,

The Rotterdam model in Madurodam is fully renovated.

You can take a harbor tour in Rotterdam that takes you very close past the Rotterdam. There are many spots where you can take wonderfull pictures of her. So maybe it is still worth comming to Rotterdam?

I am pleased to report that while on holiday, during my time in Amsterdam, I went to Rotterdam on 9 July. For the first time since 1980 (I was just a kid then) I laid eyes on this amazing ship. With the construction fences, I could not get as close as I would like, but no matter. As someone else here suggested, I walked over to Euromast and the view from there was very nice as well.

Thank you to the cruise talkers who pointed me in right direction. Taking the metro from Rotterdam CS, and walking to the ship, was all smooth and easy. Also, because I had my internet maps in hand for the area.

For some reason I did not know about the Welcome Center. All the exhibits and photographs in there made me so excited! I also purchased the heaviest souvenir from my holiday -- the hard cover book (in Dutch) of the art and design of the Rotterdam interiors. Beautiful stuff!

I could not resist being silly and telling the woman at the coffee bar about that night in 1980. I was on Dolphin IV with my grandparents, in Nassau. We lived in Florida. Rotterdam...so much larger and more dazzling than the Dolphin... was also docked. My grandfather tried to convince the security officer on Rotterdam to let us on to look around. He claimed he was checking out ships for the next year vacation. Dutch officer had none of it, so we left. Grandpa's technique did work on Emerald Seas, however, and we sailed her 2 years later and also 3 years later.

Twice now, I have been so close to boarding SS Rottterdam. I will not give up ! ! ! !

One final thought. I noticed from deck plans that although Rotterdam had some large public rooms, she also had a number of smaller bars and hide outs. Now that I understand cozy-ness and "gezellg" -- those smaller places make a lot of sense. I am sure they were very gezellig back in the day.

The Tropic Bar comes to mind. We (officers and staff) were rarely permitted to enter or mingle since it was very small.

There was also the Sky Room up top midships, which was small, but also due to the location, very few people ever found it.

Let's us all be very grateful that the SS Rotterdam V didn't get a one way destination to Alang. It makes me really mad that the SS Norway, Maxim Gorkiy, and the Regal Empress did not have the chance to follow in the SS Rotterdam's footsteps.

For 2009, I had hoped that the Maxim Gorkiy and the Regal Empress would become hotel ships. Instead, Alang gets these ships once again!!!!

Here we go again! The Rotterdam was the only one to stand a chance at survival.

The others lacked the original features that make it historic, and the RE has a too chopped up layout for anything.

Saving and converting an old ship to a hotel is more difficult than building a new one. Since it is such a massive and expensive undertaking only the best chance for re-use is considered. Rotterdam was the best candidate.

I suggest you stop wining and spend some time and money on the preserved ships we have.

I don't quite understand how my reference to the small, intimate Tropic Bar and Sky Lounge ties into the fate of the Maxim Gorky, Norway or Regal Empress?

Mike,

We sailed on Rotterdam a number of times and frequently encountered officers and staff at the Ocean Bar just prior to late dinner. Often times we later meet them standing a the bar in the Tropic Bar.

We had some great converstations and heard some great stories and I never thought twice about some of the staff having a drink because I knew that other competent staff were on duty.

I do have a question though - especially since a Celebrity senior officer was taken off his ship a few years ago after he was reported to have had alcohal on his breath.

What were the rules for officers and staff relative to drinking and being on duty?
