Don't know if she classifies as a classic 'cruise ship' but though she was quite pretty.

I never used to give a sailing ship a second look, thinking that they were quite "ugly" with all the rigging and fittings cluttering their decks ... then I saw the Nippon Maru entering Vancouver's harbour under the Lions Gate Bridge, under nearly full sail during Expo '86 ... spectacular!

I've been hooked ever since! Though ocean liners and cruise ships are my first love, the Tall Ships are a close second. Even when their sails are stowed, they are magnificent.

I think the second pic with the tall ship (black hull) is Russian and will be in Vancouver for the olympics...she will be visiting to support the Russian team...Jeff

Yes...read the Vancouver sun...she will be arriving february 10 and docking in north Vancouver across from the city. It will be open to the public 3 times a week for tours and they are trying to get a licence to operate 1/2 day cruises up the Howe sound for a small fee...Vladimir Putin will be visiting while in Vancouver as well....Jeff

How cool is that going to be!

I saw her come thru the locks and took a webcam grab, actually had second thoughts on posting it. Now I am glad I did.

Thank you for the photo and articles. So it seems "if all goes according to plan" she will be offering half-day cruises to the public. A chance not to be missed for anyone in Vancouver. I hope someone here is able to go

That is the Cisne Branco of Brasil. She was lovely as well. Though I thought the real star was the Romanian Mircea. Both are shown here with the Mircea's sister the USCGS Eagle, as well as the very unusual Captain Miranda from Uruguay.

The beautiful KRUZENSHTERN came back through the Panama Canal today on her way back to Russia after her stint at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver last month.

A small armada of tall ships is scheduled to go through the Panama Canal this weekend. Here are a few that went through this morning:

The first two tall ships are the JUAN SEBASTIAN ELCANO of Spain and the LIBERTAD of Argentina

The next two two tall ships to enter this morning are the GUAYAS of Ecuador and the CISNE BRANCO of Brazil

Today four more beautiful tall ships of this weekends flotilla entered the Panama Canal:

The CAPITAN MIRANDA of Uruguay follows the car carrier TRANS LEADER

The beautiful and controversial ESMERALDA of Chile, currently the second tallest and longest (but not largest) sailing ship in the world which was used as a jail and torture center during the regime of Augusto Pinochet followed by the GLORIA of Columbia and the CUAUHTEMOC of Mexico.
