Any Oceanic news? She should be out of drydock in Japan and doing open houses before she sails on Wednesday, Aug 26 on world cruise #2.

Any changes in drydock? Is she ready to go?

To the average person, this doesn't sound very good. Is that the case or is this just a case of an older ship that is coming due for normal repairs and inspection updates?

The port information for Yokohama is now showing ss Oceanic as arriving back from the ship yard at 09.30 hrs on the 25th August 2009 and sailing at Noon on the 26th August 2009.

This arrival is 24 hours later than the original information which was posted.

The list is impressive but it's a normal maintenance routine. Maybe some points are already released but not validation by the Certification Society.

Yup normal maintenance and life cycle issues for the most part. One would assume that they were all addressed in the recent dry docking.

The ones due to expire November 2009 would actually hit during her next voyage so again one would assume they have been working on these points.

Most of these issues appear to have been known at the time the Oceanic was sold so hopefully no one is surprised that she needed maintenance.

Be interested to see her on return to Yokohama and what's next.

I hope so for the future of the ship. Some "incidents' in US and Canada were not expected and it was the main reason of the last dry-docking (it has been reported to me by a friend that it could be a problem with a tank or a ballast).

But be careful; the data could be outdated or are only waiting a validation from BV experts to have certification survey. But, it was earlier reported that the ship was Solas 2010 compliant and it was false. If they do the November heavy maintenance, she could be Solas 2010 Compliant ... not yet.

It's now 3pm local time and three hours after sheduled sailing time, but the live webcam site below still shows her alongside. Gangway removed, but virtually no-one there for a sendoff. Peaceboat website simply says sailing today. webcam

Thanks, Neil. I think an issue may have been the interruption to the "open day" planned for Tuesday due to the late arrival. This evening's webcam shows her to be smoking a little, which is promising.

Either she is having serious boiler problems or the engineers need to know how to adjust the air flow.

It was more common to see that type of smoke when a steamship was maneuvering and they did not adjust quickly enough ... but at the dock that does not look good.

It would be interesting to see an updated copy of the Veristar certificate to see what work was done at the recent dry-docking in Japan.

Should the Japanese shipyard been unable to complete all the work Mona Lisa appears to be free for chartering again from October 2009 to May 2010.

ss Oceanic is due at Piraeus on the 4th October 2009 on her present voyage and again on the 5th May 2010 !

As the new owners of ss Oceanic say they intend to use the ship for at least ten years, that would even be enough time for her to be re-engined or have a major overhaul at Gibraltar or Malta where they have worked on the ship in the past.

Not at all. I have a friend working as exert for BV and as soon I have an updated report about Oceanic that could be published, I will do it.

But you can trust me, the Oceanic is NOT in pristine condition. Under a good coat of paint, you have sometimes very bad vessels. For her future, it depends if PeaceBoat wants to put some money to refurbish her, first to upgrade to SOLAS 2010 AND then to have a safe machinery system, hull and tanks. At the moment, I am not sure at all for both of the conditions.

Why is BV showing the Oceanic as "Class Withdrawn"?

Did they reclass her to another society during the Japan drydock? Reflag her away from Malta?

Also FYI to the comment about the Oceanic and 2010 compliance it is my understanding that she needs no significant upgrades to meet 2010. As a Method I ship in 1965 she had a good start and the upgrades done over time put her in compliance with the key points of 2010.

If you look at Equasis you will see she is now classed with Germanischer Lloyd.

Oh sh*t.

Tube failure is one thing. Header failure is another entirely. Considering the temperature and pressure of superheated steam, all you have to do is think back to a certain well-known long blue ship to remember what a waterwall header failure looks like... and that was in port.

"Class Withdrawn" makes perfect sense at this point. Based on what I can see, those boilers must be gone. Without major repairs, boiler replacement or re-engining, I wouldn't even sail Oceanic to Alang under her own power at this point, no matter how badly I hated the engineers.

It will be interesting to see how Peaceboat decides to handle this.

Oceanic is 44yo, SSNorway was 41 at her mechanical death. Somehow I think that fate was kind when Rembrandt ceased service when she did. Had she had a boiler explosion She would not be in Rotterdam City today and on the beach.

It seems that every time they fix something, another thing breaks. I hope Oceanic can keep going.

Oceanic also had lots of mechanical problems when still with Home Lines Cruises. It can only be much worse now that old age has set in....

She has merely swapped classification societies. If class was withdrawn she would not be sailing.

Norway's boiler was a botch job of repairs if anyone ever read the full report. As to whether any of those items in the list are serious or not you'd need an experienced steamship engineer's opinion. She was surveyed this month for reclassing, after all those other lists should have been dealt with, so maybe they have. Anything of her age will have problems from time to time; should be fine as long as dealt with correctly.
