Oh wow, it looks like NCL has totally given up on any upkeep.

As I pointed out in another thread, it is sad to see these ships sitting around rusting like this, I honestly think, though we will lose them forever, it is much more dignified for them to sail up on to the beach like the Canberra.

Did NCL ever do any 'upkeep'? Were they REALLY evaluation the possibilities of returning her back to service?

Some say that they simply purchased her to stop the competition getting hold of a big US Hull.

I think they might have bought some new mooring ropes. Very sad. I still remember throwing my streamers over the side in New York as a very excited seven year old. Oh well.

I was recently on a boat tour of Philly harbor and got alongside of the ship.

A few years ago the maintinence company that looks after her gave a presentation.

1] she did get new ropes and need routine adjustment.

2] there are CCT cameras everywhere, even along the water side of the slip.

3] The interior of the ship is patrolled on a regular basis

4] There are emergency generators on board.

5] Showed the video of a remote sub. There is a lot of sea grass growing on her hull.

6] It is nearly a million dollars a year just to own her.

7] Real plans to convert her with a Stockholm/Athena type conversion?
None of the European shipyards wanted to touch it.
That generation of shipbuilding is a lost art.

Man, she's going fast. I was in Philly about a year ago and she looked maybe 2/3 as rough.

Is her underwater hull cathodically protected? I know it was back when she was still considered a military asset. If the hull was in as sound condition as NCL claimed it was, there had to be some CP past that point.

What is amazing is that the 40-plus year old paint is still holding up in places. The port-side funnel paint was applied during her last refit in late 1969 right before she was suddenly laid-up. Imagine if some billionaire came along and paid for a complete sandblasting and re-spray.

Just to answer Malcolm and to follow up on desirod7 post.

NCL was spending a lot of money to keep her in a good condition, even 18 months ago the paint looked good, now with the choice made to sell her, well I guess they figure why bother.

Well, I guess that answers my question about cathodic protection, then, since it protects against corrosion. An electric charge is run from the hull to a sacrificial block of zinc in the water, turning the zinc into an anode, which corrodes, and the hull into a cathode, which does not.

So, if the paint held up while NCL had the ship, they must have had her under CP, then switched it off when they sold her. It's not like they gave her a weekly pressure-washing or anything.

So, I wonder what the underwater hull's condition is like now...

According to what I have heard, and what they said on the Lady In Waiting documentary, the hull is in really good shape.

The last survey showed that the hull overall was in great shape. The primary issues were the same as 1969. The steel was way over specified and so it survived well.

Believe it or not the growth on the hull is actually not a major problem and it helps maintain the underwater hull.

The obvious problems are above the waterline and mostly in the superstructure where 40 years has taken its toll. It looks like parts of the superstructure are simply shot and would have to be ripped away for any future use. From the waterline you can see clear through the superstructure in a few spots.

NCL's caretakers are still there and still doing the basic care to make sure the ship is staying as dry as possible. Not too much they can do but they give her basic care until the future comes ......

Really at this point what could be done with her, IMHO she would cost to much money to refit in her current configuration, she would cost to much to refit like the Stockholm and lastly, she would cost to much to turn into a VIABLE hotel.

The only thing keeping her off the beach now is the asking price, once that drops down she will sail away during the night.

I wish.

That someone would simply... paint her funnels. Thats all. Just her funnels. So that they gleam in the sunshine, red, white & blue, reflecting the fact that they're rust-free aluminium.

It would show what could be and inspire people to find out more.

The next thing would be to make her name stand out proudly on her bow.

Just enough to get people interested.

I have submitted my idea of using the Big U as a floating mini-storage facility in Miami. Multi-use as part Mini-storage, part hotel, part museum, part restaurant promenade with shops. I think it could work.
