What is so amazing about the stunning Oceanic is that she has'nt been damaged by any major exterior alterations over the years. The pics of her anchored w/Nieuw Amsterdam and Homeric are beautiful. Back in the day when passenger ships were often unique and always interesting to look at!

Thanks a lot for posting these pictures.
It is always fascinating to see photos like that: A ship still in service next to legends like Niew Amsterdam!
The photo of her at New York of course reminds me of her return to New York this year. Fortunately I was allowed to visit her and to take some pictures. It was very surreal to see her on the Hudson in 2009 (!) next to a retired (!!!) Concorde (yes, I know, that photo is not nearly as good as the one posted above).

The enclosed boat was a tender from the days of Home Lines where she tendered in the Caribbean ports. They were removed in more recent years to increase total passenger capacity in the boats plus those tenders were worn out and having issues even in the 1980s.

Oceanic did have a collision in the fog leaving New York. I believe it was around 1982. The collision with a freighter punctured the bow, just below the medallion on the bow.

I will try to find a pic showing the hurried repair.

She also had a boiler explosion after being in Genoa for repairs and boiler retubing in her late Premier days. The explosion blew out some hull plates on the side of the ship.

Still, Oceanic has one of the best built hulls with great lines and it has held up so very well.

Mike,

Can you email those photos or can we see them elsewhere?

Also, what were the circumstances with the collision? You know any further details? I've always heard that it happened, but never anything more than that. Same thing with the boiler explosion.

Very nice pictures certainly the first 2. To think that Holland America have tried to buy Oceanic while under construction to replace Nieuw Amsterdam. But Home Lines said no, not knowing that years later they found them selfs subject fore a buy out by..... HAL.

Thanks fore sharing Ben.

Interesting....in the last photo of the Oceanic from 2009 her name on the bow has stayed the same since her Premier days back in 1985 or so. I sailed her in '87 and that font was used for the names of Premier Cruise Line ships.

Took my 1st cruise on her

The official name for the ship is now ' The Oceanic '

' The ' has been added above the name on her hull and also above her name on the superstructure !

I also find it interesting that the "Tiki Hut" or whatever you want to call it has been retained on the aft deck. It has always seemed to me to be the most temporary looking area of the ship - but has been a fixture since her Premier Days.
