Saga Rose arrived back in Southampton yesterday from her final cruise for Saga Cruises.

She has sailed again tonight at 17.00 hrs, UK time, and her destination, on the AIS ship position maps, is shown as Gibraltar !

She is expected to arrive there on the 12th December 2009 at 23.30 hrs.

If that is the case it might be the best thing. I doubt Saga would want to go through months of possibly negative press over whats in Saga Rose's future.

Didn't give her much time to off load stores, crockery, cutlery , art works etc etc etc. Would be weird to do it at Gib then fly the whiole lot back.

Hi Mike

I did wonder if she might have stopped at Swansea, if she can get in there, to have off loaded
some of her items for the new ship.

Perhaps Tony, in Gibraltar, may be able to update us when she gets there.

Hi Mike

It could be that the purchasers of the ship have also bought a lot of her gear if there is any intention to operate the ship.

Seems to be a complete lack of news and even the Captains blog on her final cruise stopped at Malta !

If the new buyer intends to use ex-Saga Rose as an accommodation ship, as previously speculated, it makes more financial sense to negotiate the onboard stores and sundries into the purchase than have to go out and purchase replacements. Art can always be auctioned off to raise cash.

Hello,

As the new potential buyer* is a ship-broker, you have to consider that it's the last voyage ...

I have no other information for the last destination, it could be Alang. The signature was scheduled the 8Th December, but ...

* the market is not officially signed between Acromas Shipping LTD and the new owner.

The free AIS ship position maps were not showing anything earlier for Gibraltar, but they are back on again and she is still there.

SAGA ROSE left Gibraltar early this morning for sea trials and is coming back this afternoon. She will be docking alongside on Friday to take on water and is due to depart at the weekend, final destination unknown.....but it may well be Lisbon!

World Cruises Agency, ie Classic International Cruises, apparently looked her over on Sunday! She would make a fine addition to their fleet - FUNCHAL, PRINCESS DAPHNE, PRINCESS DANAE, ARION and ATHENA. This would be excellent news!

Sorry if i missed something, but if CIC can take her over rather easily, why sold Saga the ship ?
I thought there was a SOLAS problem, but i may be wrong.
In any case, I hope the news is true !

Hi Tony

With Classic International Cruises interest in Saga Rose, and having updated their other ships, I expect they have the experience to update the Saga Rose.

She would make a great ship for them so lets hope they decide to purchase her.

Many thanks for the news.

This sounds like GREAT news! To many classic ships are on the way or already are taken out of service and we must hope that some of them still will get many more years in service....I really hope that CIC take her to their fleet

Very interesting news. I always thought there was to much real wood onboard to keep her in service?

It would be wonderful to see her in the CIC fleet, a growing assembly of classic ships.

CIC has looked over her before and decided she would not be economical, but who knows?

I'm not sure how she'd look in white but hey, I'll take it.

Incidentally, the wood seems to be less of a problem on FUNCHAL than expected, so perhaps this knowledge has changed the viability of SAGA ROSE. Hmm.

This would be an absolute triumph for people who love classic ships. The ROSE is in substantially better condition than I had thought before boarding her last November. Even mechanically, she is in good repair. She can operate through next year, so perhaps they will do a gradual abatement of any wood that needs to go.

It would be nice to see her around a bit longer. There is of course a simple explanation how this would be possible despite the SOLAS 2010 deadline: Maybe she will be operated for a few months only without any alterations or changes.

Like QM2, I think she looks best w/a dark hull. If she is sold to CIC (hopefully), she could be their only ship w/a dark hull.

SOLAS notwithstanding, it sounds, from what I have been told, that she could operate for a lot more than a little while longer.

I would love to see her go to CIC, not least because it might give me a chance to sail in her, which I have always assumed I never would.

If anyone can make this work it has to be CIC, with an admirable record of operating very elderly vessels (most a lot older than this).
