Hello, I haven't posted here in a long time, maybe a few years. I've cruised about 5 or 6 times on old QE2, Crystal Harmony, Royal Princess, etc., but never transatlantic. Now, I'm considering doing NY to Southampton on QM2 in July 2010. My questions:
1. Has anyone done back to back transatlantic, ie NY/South/NY and if so, any comments regarding boredom, overly long sea days, etc. I'll be travelling alone.
2. Where might I find good deals for this journey? Either just straight discounts on QM2 sailings, or combined cruise/fly deals?
3. Any way to reduce the single person in room supplement? QM2 doesn't have any single rooms.

Thanks for any comments people might have.

She's an amazing ship and a Trans Cunard style is one of travels great experiences. As for 'boredom' Cunard have one of the best entertainment/enrichment programs afloat. Look for off-season deals. Go for it!

My only complaint with two back to back crossings is the number of dressy nights. If you don't mind that, it's fantastic. Go off-season as Malcolm suggested for the best rates and any specials on single occupancy.

On a related note... I'm considering a transatlantic -> Mediterranean -> transatlantic in the fall, if the missus and I can both get 25 days' vacation approved. (Huge "if" right there.) It actually comes out cheaper than flying, which I'm not too excited about anyway.

Has anyone here done such a mammoth undertaking? I've never done a crossing before, let alone two in the same cruise... is this a big mistake?

If I may ask, why are you looking at this? What about it appeals to you?

I've only done one crossing at a time and I wouldn't likely do what you're looking at, but only because it's a lot of money to spend to just spend time on the ship.

I can't imagine being bored, but I can't tell you whether or not you would be.

Any good travel agent.

There are sometimes promotions - if there is one your travel agent or even Cunard will tell you about it.

I haven't done it, but I would if I could. I don't think it is a mistake at all - it should be a wonderful experience, especially if it lets you avoid flying.

A Transatalantic followed by a cruise and a return Transat (just like the old days!) sounds fantastic plus as posted you'd avoid a plane trip which is a huge plus!

Not done 25 nights but have done 22 and like you it worked out cheaper than flying.

Don't know if you've been to the med. before but the one thing its not is a relaxing holiday. There's just too much to see and do. Could you not explore Venice? The following day could you resist Dubrovnik? Next day, could you say no to Athens? Could you pass-up Rome? Monte Carlo? Cairo? Ephesis? Olympia?

I'm not trying to put you off. I'm suggesting that your itinerary of r e l a x busy-busy-busy r e l a x souds like the ideal way to do it.

Regards, Colin.

Well, I booked the QM2 for a 6 July transatlantic, NYC to Southampton. Decided not to do the return segment as I think 13 days asea must get boring. Had to book a D5 cabin, single occupancy, for US$2,900, as D6 and D7 are already fully booked, and for some reason D8 is 50% more expensive(?). So will fly back LHR to JFK and found a biz class one way ticket on Kuwait Air for US$1,100.

Will be leaving HKG on 24 June to LAX, then NYC before embarking QM2 on 6 July. Will try to do whole trip using just carry on bag; not sure if possible but will try.

Even using the laundromat, you do realize you'll still need at least four changes of clothes to meet the dress code, right? Elegant casual, formal, semiformal and an alternate change of casual daywear? Plus, if you're a guy, all but casual involve jackets.

I'm not saying it isn't doable (I'm sure you're doing it because of the flights-- very understandable); I'm just making sure you've thought it through. Bon voyage!

Edit: and now for my own question. Are there any viable long-term parking options in/around the Brooklyn Terminal?

Mistake? No way! If you and the missus can arrange it and you can afford it...DO IT!

I did several trips of that type on QE2: NY-Sou, cruise, Sou-NY. All of the crossings were 5 days and the cruises sandwiched in between ranged from 6 to 14 days. I enjoyed them all tremendously.

I had to stay 1 night in a Southampton hotel between the NY-Sou crossing and the cruise each time, but that wasn't too bad. I don't think this is required any more.

Since I travelled to NY from Montreal by train on which I could check bags, I almost always packed enough clothes (both daytime clothes and evening clothes) for the whole trip plus an extra two days. My 4 bags fit easily under the bed in the cabin.

Of course, if you need to fly to and from New York you'll have to take less baggage and rely on the ship's laundt/dry cleaning service.

In 2009, we sailed NY-SOTON on QM2, changed to Black Watch for Norway, 2 days ashore, then Saga Rose around Ireland from SOTON, 1 day ashore & then back to NY on Saga Ruby: 31 days.

In 2008, we sailed around the British Isles on QE2, then crossed to NY on her, in tandem with QM2, changed ships & crossed back to SOTON on QM2 in tandem with QE2: 22 days.

In 2007 we sailed on Prinsendam from Ft. Lauderdale to Rome: 22 days.

Are two crossings too much? Not for me!! I suppose that many people would hate it though. Like everything else, it depends on your tastes. We found a six night crossing on QM2 was WAY too short with too much to do & not enough time to just relax.

My opinion? Cancel the flight & book the return crossing; better still with the cruise in between. After all, 'it IS the only way to cross'!!

Graham.

I certainly hope your decision to fly back was not influenced by anything anyone has said here. There was nothing wrong with your original idea of doing back to backs.

linerguy, thanks for your comment, but no way would I be influenced by anything said in this forum or for that matter, any other anonymous forum. I pose questions on forums just to get a smattering of opinions, to see if there is any factor that I may have not considered in sufficient detail.

I decided not to do a back to back mostly because (1) I thought 13 days at sea, boredom would catch up with me, and (2) if I were to do the additional six days, by then I would have been away from my home in Hong Kong for nearly 4 weeks, which is a bit long; whereas 3 weeks away is OK.

On board the old QE2, most days at sea, I would have breakfast at Lido, then paddle tennis on the sports deck, lunch at Mauretania restaurant, dance class at Queen's Room, afternoon tea at QR, nap or just hang around, late sitting dinner, evening dancing at QR, and midnight snack at Lido, then to bed. I and my lady friend rarely attended the lecture sessions or the shows. This time on QM2 I'm going solo, so 7 nights on the TATL is more than enough, I think.
